I have a cdrw disc that I use all of the time primarily for data. Several days ago, I transferred a great deal of data to disc. A day later I put in another blank disc but the same data that I transferred still comes up and I cannot transfer any new data. In addition, using explorer, it says there is no cd available.

I have tried many new discs to no avail. I uninstalled the disc driver and then reinstalled. Again, no luck. Under device manager, it says the device is working properly. Using windows explorer, it says the drive does not exist.

The same data that I transferred several days ago still comes up; even with no disc in the drive. Weird.

Any assistance in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi AMC,

When you remove the drivers do not install others, reboot and let Windows see the hardware and install the drivers for it (I don't know of any CDRW drives that require manual installation of drivers, they should use the native Windows drivers). If that fails remove it in Device Manager (if it is there), shutdown, disconnect the data and power cables for the drive. Startup and do a full boot to Windows. Shutdown and reconnect the cables. Startup and see if Windows finds it (or try the Add New Hardware wizard). After that it may be that the BIOS is not seeing the drive when you will need to check the IDE setup in the BIOS settings (see the drive's user manual). You may possibly need to reinstall the IDE controller drivers. Lets us know how things go.

    More info?

    amc,

Go ahead and try mattman's suggestions, but if they don't solve your ptoblem I have some questions and thoughts.

What OS are you dealing with? sounds like XP.

    Using what software? Windows?

    in what program? In Windows?

    Obviously not in explorer.

What happens if you put a previously written disk in the drive? Or a music disk?

    mattman,

    CDRW drives:
Mine operate better with the drivers and other software provided with them. In fact, I think XP CD writing is awful.

    Sparrow,

Good to know, for reference what brand is it? I haven't come across any yet.

You are correct, device mgr. says it uses microsoft driver. Had to download new software when upgrading to XP, but I guess it was just writing programs.

    Hey Matt and Sparrow,

Well, I do not have to try any of the ideas you gave me. This morning my computer crashed  I could not get back into windows at all and so I formatted and reinstalled. It has taken 15 hours so far and not through. I think I am going to get another hard drive and put it in. I will then back up every day. Yes, I lost some data. It has been a week since backing up.

But thanks for your responses! I am sure I will have other questions you guys can help me with. Again, THANKS.

    Andy
