    Hi All
Hi I have intermitent cd problems, our pc does not see some cd's.
sometimes it will if we repetadly incert , seams to help if I leave
cd in and restart--sometimes. I can always see and use ms cds,any games or data
    music cds also work fine.
This is a cd rw combo drive, LG CD-RW CED-80838.device manager say this device is working properly on settings tab [X] disconect is checked[]sync data transfer is unchecked
[X] auto incert nitif is checked--these are default settings I assume, on the driver tab
-says no driver files are required or have been loaded etc etc --is this normal? if I update driver and let windows find it says the best driver windows found is already installed
INF\MSCDROM.INF----on driver tab driver file details are dimmed out..strange if I change settings to and from auto incert and reboot when prompted no changes take place in the registry----
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

    "NoDriveTypeAutoRun "=hex:b5,00,00,00
    "CDRAutoRun "=hex:00,00,00,00
    "NoDrives "=hex:fa,ef,ff,03
    ====================
    I have tried 95 00 00 00 AND> BD 00 00 00----b5 seams to work better most times.
we have tweakUI but on its paranioa tab auto play is off, I think haveing used it once has done this somehow..
Another Question how can I find out if tweakUI is the latest version?
I seam to remember there being two devices listed in device manager when pc was new, even though its a combo.

I have already removed it from device manager and let windows redetect and install again.

[windows ME and ie 6w/sp1 everthing is updated]
    Thanks
    Lonny

If it consistently reads most CDs, it all but eliminates software issues.

This could be as simple as a CD drive in need of a cleaning, or if it's an old drive that sees constant use, of replacement. Like all mechanical devices, drives wear with age and go out of spec. The tolerances involved are measured in small parts of a thousandth of an inch.

The intense vibrations caused by some CDs can result in premature mechanical failure.

And, all CDs are not created equal as far as readability. Some are more tolerant of drive misalignment and deviation from specs than others.

I'd recommend trying another known-good drive and seeing if the problem remains.

    DoctorDoom Thanks

I have cleaned it but thats with the cheapest lens cleaner available,, will get a better one soon.
Unfortuantly cant try with a known good drive to check,.

I might uninstall direct cd and see what happens over time,
since I dont use it and wont let it start with windows , maybe its the evil one here.

    Lonny
