I don't know if this is a Windows problem now or CD drive problem, but I hope you guys and gals can help me.

    A bit of backstory:

A few months ago, I was burning a music CD through iTunes. About halfway through the CD an error occurred and iTunes spit the CD out. I wasn't able to continue with the burning of the CD so I didn't think much of it .. maybe a fluke or what not.

A few days later, when I booted up iTunes, I was getting an error that another CD burning software program was in use and to reinstall iTunes. As far as I know there is no other such software on my computer (I've checked for Nero, as that would have been the choice of the person to put my pc together)

Last month, iTunes did an update which removed the error it was giving me but my CD drive still doesn't work.

My drive is an ATAPI DVD A DH20A3P

I've looked in my Device Manager area and it says the device is working properly. There seems to be no newer drives to install for it nor is there any to uninstall or rollback to (from what it says)

I've checked for new drivers, I've cleaned my registry (as iTunes helpdesk said it was a registry problem), I've deleted the upper filter (there was no lower one) with help through Microsoft site, and I've even uninstalled and let Windows XP recognize a new device but I still cannot get the CD drive to work.

My CD drive opens and closes fine, and the green light comes on to show that it's doing something ... but I get no Auto Play nor anything shows up when I explore the F: drive (which is my CD drive).

This is baffling me greatly. My last step is to take it to the person who put my pc together and have them look at it but trying not to go there if anything I can do in meantime.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

There is a strong possibility that the drive has failed - maybe the read/write laser.
That only indicates that the drive is receiving power - the fact that you cannot see the contents of a CD suggests a read problem as noted above.

It may be that the ribbon cable has failed or loosened. If you feel competent check the connection of the ribbon cable at both ends by unplugging and replacing - with the computer powered down :)

    One of these may help:
    1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
    or...
    2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
    Restart computer.
    or...
    3. http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems
    Restart computer.
    or...
    4. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
    Accept registry merge.
    Restart computer.
    or...
    5. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
    You'll see two items:
    - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
    - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

If the above won't help, most likely, Pete's right.

Did you ever uninstall iTunes and reinstall it? That's what I would have done first. It talks about another program, Windows Media Player and Windows itself have burning functions.

It may have been to fix the problem before it was broken, unfortunately yours is already broken.

iTunes has a tendency to mess with upper- lowerfilters (see my fix #2).

    Thank you all for responses.

Yes I needed a new CD drive *cry*

    But I did learn something.

Removing the upper/lower filters causes the same error to appear in iTunes, even after it was fixed from the 8 version to 9.

Thank you all for the help very much!
