I used to be able to burn data/audio etc. cd's easily using nero but now all of a sudden it's only burning images (not photos, ISO things) and I just can't understand whats happened?

It's not isolated because copying and pasting the files onto the cd does the same thing, so does using roxio cd creator and windows media player writer.
What the hell's going on? I can't find any option to change it back to just burning normal data cd's.

    Any help much appreciated.

Gti - Welcome to the Board :)
Is this very recent? - what have you done to the computer in the way of adding new software, etc?

Not overly wise to run two burning programs on the same PC, there can be conflicts.

I suggest you uninstall Nero and Roxio, decide which one you want to use and reinstall and update it. With Roxio be aware that there are patches available for certain versions coupled with specific Operating Systems.

You don't mention your OS, but if XP it is a good idea to disable the native burning software (Adaptec based)

    Thanks for the welcome :)

Sorry forgot to mention I'm running XP Pro service pack 1.
Come to think of it though I only installed SP1 recently and I think this is the first time I've tried to burn a cd since then. Possibly a connection?

The cd burning software isn't running at the same time, I only start one up when I actually want to use it.
And I've just put my nero cd in and the computer isnt recognising it! I've tried several disks in my CD-RW drive and my normal CD drive and I'm getting the same thing?
I've restarted but that hasn't changed anything. And now nothings showing up in the windows task bar even though I can access my open IE windows through CTRL - ALT - DEL..........What the hell is happening to my pc!!!!!

Somewhat disturbed to hear that you have only recently installed SP1 - I trust you have also installed all the Critical Updates through Windows Update. Without these your computer is very vulnerable to attack from viruses and the like.

I also trust you are running antivirus - fully updated and the XP firewall as a bare minimum - a third pary firewall is far more effective.

It is always possible that your machine is infected.

I suggest you download Ad-aware, update it, configure it as outlined here and delete all it finds, Also download and update Spybot and delete all items in green. Run an online virus scan and trojan scan. Links to all of these via Quicklinks in my signature.

The two specific problems you mention can be approached thus ....

For the task bar problem see here , first FAQ. This is a trusted source.

For the optical drive problem the first step is to remove both through Device Manager and to reboot to allow Windows to find them again.

Please post back with your results.

    Some further thoughts ....

This wasn't quite the point I was making - It is unwise to have more than one burning program installed.

Re. your other problems you could try a System Restore to a point prior to the troubles.

Very true, I had found some time ago that Roxio CD Creator 5 Platinum, would not run on my PC that had Nero 5.5 installed.
    Pete,
do you know if Ad-aware (Lavasoft) have fixed the problem yet with the removal of the file:wsaupdater.exe
The Lavasoft Knowledge Base Article 04060901 states
Unable to Log On To Windows XP After Removing wsaupdater.exe
    SYMPTON
After removing wsaupdater.exe from BlazeFind using Ad-aware 6 Build 181 and reference file 01R314 02.06.2004 OR 01R320 19.06.2004, THE ABILITY TO LOG ON TO THE SYSTEM MAY BE COMPROMISED.
    Know anything about that.
How do I remove these files from my system so that I won't be having that problem, just to make sure.
I will not use Ad-aware untill I know the bug is fixed or I know I don't have these 2 files in Ad-aware as I have 6 and build 181 on my system.

Best to post a thread in the Security/Virus/Spyware forum - that's where the experts are!
