following several attempts to solve my hal.dll problem, I now have another issue.

I have two hard disk drives, one a 40gb western digital drive as my master and a 120gb western digital drive as my slave. For some reason I can't see the slave drive either through windows explorer or via the recovery console, but I can see it when I go into device manager. Any clues?

    As always, thanks in advance,

    Ron.

Is it formatted and has it been assigned a drive letter?

Right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. Is it there? If so, format and assign a drive letter, if necessary.

    can't see disk

    abraxas, thanks for posting.

I've tried your recommendation but it isn't seeing the disk. Could it be something to do with creating a new boot sector when trying to solve my earlier hal.dll problem?

I rather doubt it has something to do with the boot sector.

Have any services been turned off or set to manual, like Plug and Play or the Logical Disk Manager?

They are on the same cable?

both on the same cable and no services have been switched off. System works fine when I put in another western digital slave disk! hardware failure?

That's what it sounds like. That is always the last conclusion, but the substitute seems to confirm it.

Any way of testing that possibly faulty drive in another machine (unless you bought it locally and can just replace it)?

I was pretty convinced already ;)

That seems to put the cat among the pigeons.
