Assuming you're using Outlook Express, in Outlook Express, go up to the top, click on Tools>Options>Security tab. Uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus," click OK. Access to attachments should then be enabled.

I do hope you have a virus scanner (& up to date) on your computer!

I have the same problem, but the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus," box is greyed out and I can`t uncheck it.
I`ve seen this problem posted elsewhere, most of the users....like me are using 98se and did the IE6SP1 upgrade.

I seen a registry fix about deleting the value secchangese in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\MS\IE\control Panel this is not in my registry so it must be for XP I`m assuming.

I did find a work-around for the problem:

open the mail with the attachment thats ghosted out. Select the FWD option. In the new letter that pops up, there is your attachment in the attachment pane ..... you can now open or save it, and DITTO on the virus warning.

I would however like to correct this properly. Thanks ahead to anyone who can help.

thanks, i did. they all had the same "pat" answers however. to reiterate..... when i go to the security tab to uncheck the box "Do Not Allow Attachments etc" .... its greyed out too. It can`t be unchecked. I`m running w98se with almost all the updates. I`m on Norton 2004. Like I mentioned, i can use the "work-around" to get to my attachmet.... but I`d rather just turn the feature off. I know from reading around I`m not the only one with this problem. thanks.

hose - in regedit, look at HK_Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express and see if there's an entry in the right-hand pane for "Block exe attachments." If so, change the Value Data to zero and see if that allows you to uncheck the "no attachments" option in Outlook Express. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.
