When I try to load the recent critical update for IE6, after the Accept dialog, it opens the progress window but no progress. When I cancel I get an error in Explorer. I tried the repair option, that didn't work. Also, many times pages halfway open then freeze. Occasionally IE won't start at all and I have to reboot

If you haven't already, empty the cache and delete all temporary internet files and try again.

Let us know if that fixes the problem.

I tried deleting temporary files, I thought that was empyting the cache, how do I do that?

    Deleting temporary files didn't help.

How can I remove IE entirely? Control panel lets me revert to IE 5, then there is no entry for IE in control panel.

The problem may be more Internet related than your machine.

I had the same problem yesterday on more then one machine. I had problems even getting to the site let alone download from it.

It may also be that the Update site was overloaded also which quite often happens when larger udates are made available.

This may be directly or indirectly related

This morning it is behaving like it was right on my HD.

This BBS has not been as fast for DAYS.

I have learned over time that when this happens not to go making a lot of machine changes for a few days. Other than cleaning out the Tmp Int Files and cookies that is.

Even that and a cold boot of the machines(s) did not help yesterday.

HAHAHA. The joke is on me. The problem is back.

For 15 minutes I could not get here, Windows Update Site or several other places from either machine.

This may be just another one of my WAGS but my gut feelings are right now that anyone having the problem should not just jump into making any un-necessary changes on their machine.

And I cannot balme the new patches etc. as it is no different than it was yestreday before them.

I don't think it's the internet, I was able to update my other machine easily.

Are you running the setup directly from the site, or are you downloading the setup to your hard drive first?

    I don't think it's the internet

    I disagree

I was able to update my other machine easily.

I got two done last night but could not get the 3rd.

This morning ( early ) I got it done with no problem. Right now I can't get either machine to the Update site again.

And with me being on cable and all three machines on and having the same problem at the same time and all come back to normal at the same time does not ( at least for me ) point to anything other than an Internet problem. It is the only thing that is really common between the three.

Other than my Router which some joker may be pulling a DoS attack on. Which I understand is possible.

One thing that I have learned about the Windows Update site ( especially the new one ) if it does not go through the first few screens within a resaonlable amount of time ( about 10 seconds or less for me ) STOP it right there. And try later.

If that is the case then it does look like a machine related problem for you.

    Color me Red faced.

Going back over things I see by your original post ( which apparrently I did not read too carefully ) this may require a complete re-install of IE6. Not just a repair.

Also I do not see which version of Windows you are using. As it * may be * a little OS corruption related too.

Have you done a full system all files Virus/Trojan and Spyware check lately ?

But, if and when you do a re-install make sure AV checking if OFF.

But before you try the re-install I would see about somehow getting the Full IE6 SP1 package downloaded to the HD. If the machines are Networked you can download it to one and then copy it too the other and then run the ie6setup from there.

    HHMMMM !!!!

That brings up another * possible * problem. When you did install IE6 did you do it online or download it first ? Any LITTLE hiccup in the online install may cause BIG problems in the use. That problem I have had.

    shadowhawk raised a good question.

If the install is done online and you try a repair it may not work prpoerly if the machine can not get back online.
