    Hi,

Trying to find users.js to point the bookmarks file to a network drive, and I don't seem to have the file on my system. I've looked on two seperate XP + NS7.01 builds, and I still haven't had any luck.

Has anyone got any advice? Also, is it safe to make the NS folder Read only for users? I don't want students mucking up settings for someone else to come to when they log in later. We can tolerate changes, but only for the life of that user's session.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

    Thanks in advance

    Ed.

You would have to manually create the user.js file, it is not present by default. Netscape will copy setting from the user.js file to the prefs.js file on startup. If you wish to delete a setting from the user.js file, you must not forget to remove it from the prefs.js file. Also, the user.js file can be edited while netscape is open (settings only take effect after a restart).

As far as making the the user folder read only, I doubt it would work well. You have to consider the following things at a minimum need write access:

Cache directory (you can relocate the cache directory to another location, such as the temp directory)
    Mail (if mail is used)
    News (if news is used)
    history.dat
    history.mab
    XUL.mfl (xul cache)

    prefs.js
    cookies.txt
    cookperm.txt
    bookmarks.html

Is it possible to use some standard settings that you create, and start fresh with each user? This way it wouldn't matter if anything is changed if you can simply delete and replace all the files in the *.slt directory when a user logs out.

A quick test show that if the directory is empty but the profile exists mozilla will create the necessary user files from the defaults (which you can edit to your satisfaction). All you need is a script to delete the contents of the *.slt directory when a user logs out.

Obviously the above assumes all users in question will be using the same netscape profile...

    HTH (excuse the rambling...) ;)
