Since I installed NS 7.0 streamline from Sillydog everything I try to download, such as NS7.2 upgrade, the browser changes the file name by adding .jpg to the end of it. There is no program that I know of that will open a downloaded program as a jpg image. What the heck is wrong?

    Hi Loren,

In Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System
Disable any file type you do not wish Netscape to handle. If Netscape is your default browser, I would suggested leaving "HTML" enabled.

Let us know if you continue having problems.

Ramona, thanks for the email, I deselected everything except HTML and tried to download POPcorn, same problem, it wants to download as a JPG image, I'm really getting tired with the problems with NS but I hate IE, how can I fix this?

    Hi Loren

    Try this....

Edit | Preferences | Navigator .... expand (select) Helper applications.
See the "File Types ". Look for an octet-stream listing. If the extension type is .jpg, then delete it. Also your download file(s) are usable. Browse to the file, "rename" by removing the incorrect file extension. If you do NOT want to correct/use the file, they SHOULD be deleted.

    Loren,

You probably won't have anything listed in your Application Helpers, as Netscape uses Windows' File Types, unless you have added a File Type to the Helper Applications.

What program do you regularly use to open your images. A lot of users prefer IrfanView (Freeware) which is a great little image viewer. You can download the file HERE

Then you can associate your graphics files to this program. This is only if you have no other graphics viewer which you are currently using for this purpose.

If you do currently have an image viewer that you prefer, and for some reason you can't get Netscape to return the file-type associations to their previous settings, you can do it through Windows itself. Here's how:

Locate one of the graphics files of the type you want to change. Click once on it to select it (so that it is highlighted), then hold down the SHIFT key while clicking once with the right mouse button. Select "Open with... ". From that menu, locate the application you'd like to have open this file type from the list provided and highlight it. Then ensure that you've checked the box for "Always use this program to open this file" and click the "OK" button. Windows will now create a new file-type association for this graphics-file type and will remember it from now on. Do this for JPG, GIF, and PNG file (if you use them).

Dennis L is right on re: renaming the *.exe files. Simply remove the ".jpg" then the file is useable.

This problem was more frequent in Netscape 6 versions, and happens very infrequently with 7.0, and almost never with 7.02.

Thanks for the info, I did as Ramona suggested and deselected everything except HTTP and HTTPS. Still does it. I can't rename the download as it does not have the .jpg file extension in the name. It shows up in the download manager and I can't change that either. I was using Irfanview when the problem started, I thought that was what caused the problem and deleted it, no good. Now I can't re-download Irfanview because it comes thru as a jpg file. I'm using one of the default picture viewers that came with Win XP, the Windows and Fax viewer which is similar to Irfanview. I just tried to download POPcorn again, same thing, jpg extention.

    Hi Loren,

Give us the link for your POPcorn download.

I'm somewhat confused, as first you said:
I can't rename the download as it does not have the .jpg file extension in the name.

    Then you said:
I just tried to download POPcorn again, same thing, jpg extention.

Did you try changing the jpg extension to .exe?

Have you tried right clicking a jpg file and selecting a program other than Netscape to open with?

    In Preferences|Navigator|Download
    Instead of selecting Download Manager
    Select: Open a Progress dialogue

    Open Windows Explorer
Ensure that no files are hidden
    Click on: View
    Select: Folder Options
    Click on: File Types
    Scroll down to JPG
What Program does the file type use to Open With?

    One other question...
Have you ever had Netscape 6 on your system?

Ramona, I guess that is kind of confusing. The download manager in Netscape says essentially-you have selected to download a JPEG file nemed----. I can't change that. After I download it the file only shows the name, popcorn setup, no jpg extension so I can't rename that either. If I try to open it I get-preview not available. Any way I re-read the post by Dennis and went back to preferences, helper aps, and the octet stream is there but no jpg. I clicked on advanced and there it was! I deleted the sucker and just finished downloading and installing popcorn. Thanks Dennis, I think that did it, I'll know for sure after I try a couple of more downloads. Ramona, I just did a search for popcorn and found it. It's an email pre-view program that displays only headers and allows one to delete the mail without opening it first. Great if a virus is hiding there somewhere, or if you get a lot of spam, which I do. I'll find the URL for you and post it here, Thanks again, Loren.

    Hi Guys

Well Golly-Gee, it worked!! It seems when "octet stream" appears in "Helper Apps" it's Netscapes way of saying .. oops. On previous occurrences, problem downloads were appended with 2 file extensions.. example filename.exe.jpg. Ramona and I have seen this a number of times. This is the first time I've seen it "replace" the extension. As Ramona pointed out, the Helper application's job is to call a program (outside of Netscape) to open file types it can't. I use a 3rd party download manager, so I've never had this problem. The only "helper" I have is "application/msword" which lets me move word.doc emails to m$ Word.
Loren, I owe you an apology, using you as a guinea pig on something I've never tried before. I hoped if octet stream and jpg were associated, this "could" be the problem. We all lucked out on this one.

Dennis, I don't mind being the guinea pig if the results are positive. I would have found your solution earlier but to get to the jpg. part of the octet stream you first have to click on the 'advanced' tab. Without doing that the helper ap just shows 'octet stream' no jpg extension, that is why I didn't find it earlier. Hey guys I really appreciate all you help, this is a great forum and getting better all the time.

    Hi Loren,

It just occurred to me, that when you were unable to rename the download as you were not able to view the .jpg file extension. Could it be that you don't have Windows Explorer configured to "Show all files "? If that is the case then that's why you weren't seeing the complete file name.

These things drive me crazy until I know the why and wherefore! ;)

Ramona, you got me there, I have never used Explorer, tell me how to check it and I'll go see what it is configured to do.
