IBefore I completed installing Norton AV on to my W98 pc the screen went black and I had to power off and then on to continue. But the boot process stopped when I got this error message:

"Msgsrv32 caused a general protection problem in module essolo.dev"

Clicking the Ignore box did nothing. Clicking the Shut Down box shut the pc down. But I have the same problem when I try to boot again. So I can't use the pc!

Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to go about fixing whatever it is that is going on? I am appending more details that may (or may not) be useful. Thanks. ..... wdc

    FWIMBW:

    1. The pc is a Pentium III with 98 mB of Ram and lots of harddrive (of which 7+ gB is free). The OS is Windows 98 (not the SE version).

    2. I <can> work the pc in the SafeMode. All my WORD files seem to be there and accessible. Word is still fully useable. But, of course, I have no working modem or printer in SafeMode.

    3. My sound system is ESS (Solo?) version 2.1

    4. It MAY be that I had not closed all my active programs when I was installing the Norton AV program. If I click C-A-D now when the pc is in its stalled state (with the error message displayed)on the screen) I see that 3 programs are shown as active: something called Ghost????, a Norton program, and a third I can't recall right now (I am away from the stalled pc). I I can provide this info if you think it is relevant.

You might try uninstalling Norton in Safe Mode, reboot to DOS and restore a previous registry, something prior to the install of Norton.

Then you can make sure all active programs are shut down before installing Norton again.

Are you Installing AV only, or systemworks? if SystemWorks, then make sure you do NOT install the CrashGuard portion of the program. It casues crashes, not preent them - altho not as bad as what happened to you. I think, tho that your best option is to followKevinSaul's advice.
