....all I seem to do in here is ask questions rather than help answer any.So here is another one:D ........Whenever I use a P2P client like Kazaa Lite or eMule when I go to shutdown the computer my internet connection will not disconnect.I have to open the taskmanager and choose shutdown, then It just shutsdown as far as the windows is saving your settings and just sticks there.I have to hold the power button in to turn my PC off.

I am running Windows XP and have an unusual Broadband connection,I can connect and disconnect as if I had dial up.
This used to happen in Windows 98 SE too.Can anyone help?

I don't know what I'd do without all you folks.:)

No need to be sorry - ask away to your heart's content - that's why we're here and without questions there would be no need for answers - and no BBS :D

    but

Please use a descriptive title to your threads which reflects your problem. Far better chance then that somebody will stop by and assist. Thread title edited

I suggset you run Spybot and Ad-aware - update their reference files andrun Spybot before Ad-aware, Delete all they find.

Also run Cwshredder - download at the bottom of the page.

More than likely you have picked up something nasty from Kazaa, etc.

Even after you disconnect from Kazaa and close, it continues to run in the system tray, and if someone was uploading it may keep your connection live. Right click on it's tray icon and exit before shutting down to see if that helps. Not familiar with eMule but possibly doing something similar.

PeteC.....I use AdAware 6 and Spybot regularly as I had bother with
Adware before.I downloaded Cwshredder and ran it.....my system was clean.I only ever use Kazaa Lite and eMule does not have Adware at all.

noahdfear......There is only 3 icons in the tray when I try to shut down...Norton AV and Norton Personal Firewall and of course the internet connection icon.

    Trojan scan?

Take note of what is running on processes tab of task manager before normal shutdown (not having used one of those programs) and before a hanging shutdown.

    1. someone could be downloading shared files from you, thus the connection remains open.
    2. you could have atrojan.
    3. an auto update/error reporting program could be running.
    4. you could have messenger service running.
    5. you could have undetected spyware.

Also, even after viewing a web page and closing the browser window, the conection still exists to the server that hosts the web page. Run a command window and type netstat -a to see all connections and you will see "time wait" connections to servers that web content was downloaded from. The time wait will eventually disconnect completely after a certain time interval.
And you may also see what is REALLY keeping your conmnection opened!.

P2P tends to be one of those tasks that hang or sits in taskman with a "Program Not Responding" splat on it . You won't see it in the systray. You'll have to do a control\alt\del taskman to endtask on this.

Kazaa comes with it's own bag of quirks and curses. If your going to use it you have to pay the piper. This is not a user friendly install_click_and_go kind of program. You have to do a study up on how to trim it down, set the options, security precautions and even then it's still going to throw fits, (hence the phrase "pay the piper ").

Don't have these guys set to autostart at bootup and don't have them running at shutdown. Use 'em when you need 'em and disable or turn them off when you don't.

As stated they do not like to shutdown gracefully when someone is connected to or downloading a share from your computer, or when these programs are doing their own mystery_auto_whatever.

    BTW bluenose 12,

Glad to see that you are using Kazaa Lite as opposed to Kazaa. If you're gonna use one, the Lite is definitely the lesser of two evils.

I used the Sygate and it could not get through my defences.

I have a feeling that the problem is MAYBE something to do with the modem(BT Voyager ADSL Modem USB).I can shut down fine normally it's only if I've been running Kazaa or eMule(I use this most now) for a lenghthy period that I can't.

This sounds very much to me like you have a virus and/or spyware/malware onboard that doesn't want to be found.

This should not happen, and I had no problem getting a full scan.
This should not be a problem either, since you requested the scan. If it was blocked by a firewall, you should have been prompted to allow it. I have never had AV or firewall block an online scan. Just out of curiosity, what are your defenses?

How about posting a HijackThis log?

I got the impression from the Sygate report that it was a good thing that it's probes could'nt get through. When I disabled my Norton personal firewall and did the test again there was still nothing bad to report.

I am more and more convinced that it is something to do with the modem,I will get another one at some time in the near future and see if that does the trick,I'd rather have an Internal modem anyway.

Thanks for your help,no doubt you will be getting more questions from me in the future. :D
