I recently had a problem accessing shared folders on a PC on my home network (see separate post) which after many wasted hours trying all sorts of things I resorted to doing a WINDOWS XP PRO 'repair' installation.

After that I WAS able to access shared folders on that PC from other PCs on the network (and vice versus) HOWEVER I now CANNOT access the internet (get message FAILED TO CONNECT) but I CAN access shared folders on other PCs so (it seems) the network connection via a router is working).

I CANNOT even 'ping' the PC from itself or other PCs on the network.
I have got to the stage that I will reformat and reinstall everything if I cannot find what to do (maybe I should have done that in the first place as it would have been faster that the many hours I have now wasted but I really would like to find a solution just in case this problem ever happens again.

I have Windows Firewall enabled (well I turned it off from the WINDOWS FIREWALL in CONTROL PANEL but it still shows ON in the SECURITY CENTRE which seems odd) - is this normal for Windows XP Pro? How do you check/change the Firewall settings?
Does anyone have a solution or at least some suggestions

    Thanks

    Hi jparnold,

How 'bout doing some simple things first so you can say you've already tried it.

First, Firewall: Any reason for turning it off?

Second: In Control Panel, click on Network Connections. Right click on your LAN and click Repair.

No joy? Then third: Turn off your computer. Turn off or unplug your router and unplug the cable going to it. Wait a minute. Reboot your computer and plug your router back in again. After re-establishing a connection (all the lights stop flashing and are steady, then plug in the cable.

No joy? Your router has a "reset" button. It might be a button on the back, or it might be in a recessed hole in which case it requires a paper clip. "reset" for about 15 seconds and then let it re-establish itself.

    Any joy?

Just tried everything you suggested in the same order as in the reply.
Still cannot access the internet from that PC
Please note that the PC can 'talk' to other PC's on the network (eg open and copy from shared folders). It's just connecting to the internet won't work.

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > Windows Firewall is there to be configured.

Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab > LAN Settings button > uncheck Auto detect settings.

Auto detect settings was already unchecked.

I find it very strange that I cannot even ping the PC from itself, when I try to I get FAILED TO CONNECT - is that a clue as to what theb problem is?

    Yes, a big clue.

You mean that you tried to ping 127.0.0.1?

If so, it means there's a problem with your TCP/IP installation. Have a look at this article: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

    Thanks Arie,

I read the article (How to reset Internet Protocol) and followed the method (netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txt) and I still cannot access the internet (or ping to itself).
This is the contents of that log which looks nothing like the example given in the artivle -

reset Linkage\UpperBind for PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8139&SUBSYS_813910EC&REV_10\4&122329E2&0&58F0. bad value was:
    REG_MULTI_SZ =
    PSched

reset Linkage\UpperBind for ROOT\MS_NDISWANIP\0000. bad value was:
    REG_MULTI_SZ =
    PSched

reset Linkage\UpperBind for PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2449&SUBSYS_30138086&REV_03\4&122329E2&0&40F0. bad value was:
    REG_MULTI_SZ =
    PSched

    <completed>

    Anything else I can try.

Please be aware that initially I had a different problem with the same PC. I could not access shared folders on that PC from other PC although I could access shared folders on other PCs from that PC AND I could access the internet. After posting a 'help' elsewhere at this forum I could not get it to work so did a Windows XP PRO REPAIR installation. That fixed the initial problem but ended up not being able to access the internet (the reason for THIS post). It seems that the repair installation has caused THIS (unable to connect to internet).
Have I done ireparable damage to the Windows installation?

    Thanks Ari

I had found that 'page' at the Microsoft support site by accident earlier (since my last reply) and followed EVERYTHING it it and some other suggestions I also found at Microsoft support (eg repairing winsock by deleting the entries in the registry and letting Windoows re-create them, tcp/ip etc etc) all without success).
By the way everytime I tried the PING command it returned error 63. I never did find out what error 63 means.
Well after that I thought that it was time to move on and stop wasting time (I lost count of the hours I have spent on this problem).
The problem is on an older pc I use to test downloaded software (shareware etc) to keep my 'main' pc clutter free.
I also have another pc which had been given to me (AMD 2Ghz - first non Intel PC I have ever had) and so I installed Windows XP on that and put the other PC away (together with it's problem). Not sure what I will do with it maybe reformat it one day and start again but it really now is only a spare PC.

I would still love to find out what the problem is.

Do you know what error 63 is when trying to ping an ip address even the ip address of the same pc? I am not scared of making changes to the registry and have done so in the past quite a few times, following instructions found on the internet.

    Thanks again

63 is a network input output error. I would change out the hardware at this point.

    Hi Arie,

The NIC is part of the motherboard (onboard) so I installed an addon (nic) card disabled the old connection and enabled the new (for the addon nic card) but still no access.
Maybe it is something else on the m/b which is at fault (would you agree?).
In 'saying' that the 'clock' kept changing when I powered the PC down so I checked the (backup) battery voltage which was fairly low so swapped it with a battery from another m/b (I have a few floating around) which while not new had a much better voltage but the clock still changes after pwering down so maybe other 'parts' of the m/b are becoming faulty. Oh well I have started to use another m/b and after installing XP etc ALL is now working.

    Thanks again for your input.

Well, that sure indicates the other MB is faulty.

JUst letting everyone know that the problem was never solved and it WAS a Windows XP issue as I booted the same PC using a LINUX CD and was able to connect to the internet.

I haven't tried it yet but I'm guessing that a reformat and reinstall will fix the problem - love to know what the problem was as I tried EVERYTHING suggested both on this forum and also at the Microsoft Help pages.

If you haven't wiped the drive yet, access the properties for the adapter:
rt click Network places > properties
rt click local area connection (adapter) > properties
    double click tcp/ip internet protocol
set to obtain ip address auto
set to use following dns (either auto or use ip address of router, 192.168.x.x)
Advanced button > Wins tab > enable netbios over tcp/ip

    Then:
control panel > admin tools > services
verify the needed services are set to auto and started

    Tony,

I haven't reformatted so I did all that you suggested.
Still cannot access the internet, still cannot ping ANYTHING (get error 65).
All that I can do with my home network from the PC is access shared folders on other PC's.

? First you say you solved it by using a new MB & reinstall, later you claim you haven't solved it & haven't reinstalled...

Anyway, I won't have anything to add if this still is a problem.

    Arie,

With all my 'ramblings' maybe I didn't explain properly what I did to resolve the problem.
    Firstly the scenario -
    I have 3 PC's -
A My main PC where I do most of my serious work eg video editing plus email.
B My old PC where I test new software and have a couple of games installed.
C Spare PC not used and not on the network
    A and B are networked
I began having problems access folders/files on A using B (subject to an earlier post)
I did a Windows XP repair installation on B
I then could access shared folders on A from B but then I couldn't access the internet (on B).

I created this post and followed all suggestions madePLUS I found some suggestings from Goggling the problem.

I then disconnected B from the network and connected C - everything worked. This proved that there was a software/settings problem on B.

I disconnected C and reconnected B and did a format and new installation of Windows (I had become tired of all the time wasting) - everything now works.

That is why I would love to know why B stopped accessing the internet (although file sharing still worked) even after doing everything suggested.

I will never know now that I have reformatted.

    Thanks for your interest.
