This folder on my PC is a different colour to all the others and I would like to know if there is any significance to this.

Why I ask is because I use (used) a well known antivirus program, a good firewall and I update my O/S files regularly, yet something erased all the "exe" files on my backup drive.

I ran a free online virus scan from another AV Program and the first message I received was that a "nachi.worm" had been found and removed. This is why I say I ^used^ a well known antivirus program. After all, why pay for something which doesn't work.

And while I have the attention of some of the Guru's on this BBS, perhaps someone can tell me how to determine if I am rid of this garbage.

    Many Thanks.

    Hi!

The different colour, blue I guess, shows files and folders that have been compressed by the OS. There is a setting for a certain number of days before this happens. The files can be used as if they weren´t compressed.

Do an online check for virii and other unwanteds:

    Hello BreezyCricket,

    * yet something erased all the "exe" files on my backup drive.*

One process that will do this is System Restore if you did a restore to a point prior to a Restore point before updating the backup drive. You might not want SR to monitor that drive, only the OS drive, or create a restore point after updating the backup drive.

It sounds improbable that a virus would act on backups instead of the OS partition.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Christer:

The Trend Micro Housecall is what found the Nachi.Worm, and hopefully this will now be a thing of the past.

    Charlesvar:

I thought it unlikely that anyone would start a virus that would do it's damage on a backup drive, but I also watched the America's Cup sailing and the Kiwi's had a, 'boat that wouldn't float', so I thought anything was possible.

I have been having considerable trouble with some "New" drives I purchased and have had to do a number of restores, which, if you are correct, and I would bet dollars to doughnuts you are, would account for this.

    Many Thanks for both replies.

    BreezyCricket,
    You´re welcome!

The nachi.worm is known under a few alias', among others W.32.Welchia.Worm.

You can get more information and links to MS Bulletins on Symantecs W.32.Welchia.Worm page and to be sure that it´s in history, download and run this Removal Tool. It will run and either tell You that it doesn´t exist on Your system or remove it.

I will not say where I learned it but it was the data hard losing way.

It is not a good idea to set System Restore to monitor any backup drives.

I myself have it set to monitor the OS drive only.

    Thanks for the info.

This was also suggested by Charlesvar and I immediately removed the backup drive from SR.

There was a line missing in my reply

    I agree with charlesvar

For me it is a good thing that I did have problems with my Quicken and a couple of other programs.

I have since begun to but backups on CD RW also.

That is one problem with System Restore. If you do not make a new RP after making changes all the work can be lost.
