    I am working on a Celeron 500mhz with 256mb memory, 13g hard drive, windows 98 2nd.

Am getting with the burning software (no matter what sft using i.e. nero, adaptec or nti) a not responding error message when opening up the sft's exe. Example Easy 6 creatorc not responding and similar with other sft exe file.

Have tried 2 different burners and getting same type error messages no matter what sft I use.

Have run diags. on memory in multiple loops and nothing indicates a problem there, h.d. checks out also as does the processor and system board.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I believe its hardware problem with system but not sure what seeing as everything else works fine. Have also put burner as master on secondary and slave on primary results the same.

Nero and Adaptec do not play well together installed at the same time on the same system.

They are not installed at the same time. I know how to do an uninstall and how to clean the registry. So each is installed with no other conflicts in that area.

You may have a problem with your ASPI layer - download Win 9x ASPI from here - should include AspiCheck to check your ASPI - the Win XP version does.

    Alternatively run System File Checker.

Took machine off my bench to work on a couple others but have downloaded the file and will give it a try. I will let you know what the results are.

    Thanks PeteC.

If you install both Nero and Roxio, install only ONE packet writing program. That is, install either In CD or Direct CD, but not both. That's the trick to get them to live together. If you do, none of it is going to work.

No they are not installed at the same time. I know better than that. After one fails I uninstall and clean the registry and install a different one.

Tried the aspi install and the sfc and neither did the trick. Is not making sense. None of the sfts used are even recognizing the cdrw drive and then it stop responding on the executable for the software. Do not believe it has anything to do with the software but some hdw device is not functioning on all cylinders but cant figure out what hdw it is. Not the memory cuz have replaced with new and still the same not responding message. Unfortunately I am a small org. and dont have boards or processor to swap but am leaning to one of those being the culprit just not sure which one.

Am going to rebuild again using w2k and see if results the same if they are then I will be pretty sure its the hardware and will probably just trash the machine.

Okay now this is getting interesting. On this same machine I swapped out the h.d. for a new out of the box 40g wd. I then installed w2k. During the install function and at the point where it started to detect devices it all of a sudden went to a black screen with ( ' ) apostrophes filling the display. Graphics card I am using is a ATI AGP 32mb and I dont think its that cuz it came out of one of my other machines and it worked just fine there.

Has anyone seen ( ' ) fill their screen and if so what was the cause ???
