I'm at my daughters house and she needs a new CPU. The monitor she has is
fine. I was looking at this one from best buy but noticed that these are
resident on the chipset. So before i buy it, i thought i'd ask.

    Question
Is it possible to replace the graphics\sound\ethernet devices for better ones,
if those devices are "built-in" to the motherboard chipset?

    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900
Intel® High Definition Audio (5.1 support)
    Built-in Intel® PRO 10/100 Ethernet LAN

    thank you,
    savagcl

The main board needs to have an AGP (brown) slot to be able to get a better video card.

I would give the sound card a good try before replacing. Unless she has a set of 200.00 dollar speakers she probably won't be able to tell the difference.

You won't notice any difference at all if you replace the ethernet card.

Not sure why you'd want a pc that you have to spend another Couple Hundred Dollars on to get it where you want it.

    Thanks for the reply.

So i take it that those "integrated" devices can be over-ridden.
I've never seen it but have heard/read that its not a good idea to have things
integrated into the MB. Seems like it can, but not always, cause trouble when
trying to upgrade to a later (non-integrated) device.

    thanks again,
    savagcl

There should be an option in the BIOS to disable the specific on-board device. If that is ot present you may run into resource conflicts.

I agree that sound and ethernet are probably not going to show much diffrence. However video might, especially if the on-board video is using shared RAM, and it probably is.

    NetDoc,

Thanks for the help, it will come in handy, I'm sure.

My solution is made. I'll give her my old PC (still twice the GHz of her present
one) and get me a new PC without any integrated stuff on the MB except SATA
    ports.

    Appreciate the info, thanks again,
    savagcl
