When I edit a particular text file (MTMS.JOB) with Notepad, it sticks three hex bytes in front of the first line -- specifically, hex EF BB BF. This never shows up when I try to edit the file again, but as an input file to a program, it wreaks havoc.

It's not a schedule file, just a simple text file, but even when I rename it to something.txt it still does this.

Other files, such as JOBFILE.TXT, don't have this problem.

Should I file a bug report?

Odds are it's doing it for a reason;)

When you do a File->Save As, what does the "Encoding" say? Is it set to ANSI or Unicode?

It's possible that the .JOB files are getting corrupted by Windows/Notepad because .JOB files are a Task Scheduler file format.

Try creating a new file with no extension at all and see if those extra bytes are still there. Don't copy+paste the content, type it out newly.

If no joy, then try using a better text editor. Notepad is rather limited, lacks features such as line numbers, etc.

I've been using W32 Pad for years. It's free and works well. And file size is limited only by available system memory, unlike Notepad's 64k limit.
