I have what I think is a unique problem. I run 98SE and still use a modem to connect, using earthlink as a provider. The problem started when my son try’d to load aol.
I can connect to the internet; I get the two computer icons that signify that, and the connection speed. But when I try to actually browse or visit a website, nothing happens and the browsers always go to the same url:

    http://www.orbitexplorer.com/cgi-bin/dns.cgi?Affid=1gpp&bid=

I have both IE 6.0 and Netscape 7.1. They both open correctly and both browsers do the same thing. Earthlink says all my settings are correct, as evidenced by the fact I can dial up and connect. I have completely uninstalled aol and MacAfee, but I still can’t browse. It seems as if nothing is leaving the computer.

    Any suggestions?????

First, right click on Network Neighborhood, go to Properties and remove any references to AOL you find there.

Also check Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Network Adapters (click on the plus sign to expand the category) and if anything relating to AOL is there, remove it.

Then Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab>Setup button, run through that wizard to make sure it's set to use your dialup connection.

Download LSPFix and save it to the harddrive. You probably won't need it but if you do, you won't be able to get online to get it.

Then, if you haven't already, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or Ad-Aware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

If you find you can't surf the net after all that, run LSPFix.

Hopefully, that'll fix things without haveing to get more involved.

Sorry but that is not a unique problem.

I had the same thing when a yongster here tried to install AOL. But I found it was NOT his fault. He thought it was ASKING to install. The machine with the problem is a 98SE with Cable Internet. Things can happen MUCH FASTER. It took me at least two days to get things cleaned up.

In fact about a week later Something came up on the screen dealing with AOL And if the kid had not been watching and stopped I would have had a second mess. It was coming from some Website they WERE GOING to. Just for the heck of it I asked him to go there again and sure enough an attempt was made to install AOL.

Now a friendly suggestion. MAKE SURE users pay attention to where they are gong on the Internet.

You may have a hijacker on your system. Run Spybot, Ad-aware, CWSHredder, and post your "HijackThis" log here.

This is a hijack. Adaware, spybot and hijackthis are excellent solutions. They should be able to take care of this. OrbitExplorer is a variant of parasite Xupiter, pointing at orbitexplorer.com. SEE:
    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=o...=UTF-8&domains=www.wintrouble.net&sa=N&tab=wg

The only thing I am curious about is if you have anything labeled as an added toolbar in IE (either set to view or hidden) or have any software reference to orbitexplorer or "Web Assistant ". See:
    http://www.orbitexplorer.com/faq.html

Did you install any new software appi lately? Ahhh on second thought forget the curiosity, now a days the buggers get in if you breath to hard on your computer. :) May I suggest you visit the security forum room and browse up on some suggestions for protecting yourself. This sort of thing has become an epidemic. You will run across it again unless you take security steps to stop or at least minimize you risks.

Hi Newt...you there?...How did I find myself in the "Other Internet Software" forum? I think this post is bound for the Security forum.

    To Billybob,

    How did you fix it?

I am sorry. I just plain missed your post.

It took A LOt of MANUAL reg cleaning.

I tried Norton WinDoctor. Regseeker and they would take stuff out just to have it right back on a Restart.

I botched install is quite often FAR more troublesome than a complete install. Because everything needed for an un-install is ( or may not be ) there.
