    Hi,

I am working on this customers computer and am stumped. He says all he did was intsall a kids program for his daughter and got a BSOD which locked up the system. He turned the computer off manually and it never booted again. It is a Compaq Presario 5190 with a AMD K6-400. When I turn on the system there are no beed codes at all and all 3 keyboard led's stay on and nothing is on the screen. I changed the video card x3, changed the cpu x1. changed the DIMM, unplugged all drives oine at a time, changed the hard drive out and have had no change in the status of this computer. My last thing to suggest is to believe that the Mother Board is dead, but I wanted to check in here first. Forget trying to ask help from Compaq.

    Thanks for the help.

    Jerry

    Clear NVram jumper?

Sounds like you have given it a good try.

If the MBD has a jumper to clear NVram you could try that - or pull the system battery for 24 hrs. - also - try a different pwr supply if possible, one of the voltages might be out of spec enough to keep the system from booting.

I am also assuming that you have allready yanked all the other cards...

Otherwise you maybe right about heading for a new MBD. With luck that case will accept a standard ATX MBD.

    Been there too .....

You'll find a replacement MB from Compaq will cost you $240+ with a return MB required. I've found it much cheaper to replace MB, PS and add a heatsink/fan that will fit in one of those **** cases rather than to try and go back with stock parts. You could also be having PS problems, but a regular 250W ATX PS probably isn't going to work in there either. Nice machine, huh? If only John Q. Customer knew what was under the hood .......

As to your problem, I'd totally concur with Profgab and add that for the amount of time you've already put into this, you can probably get replacement MB, PS and CPU Cooler for under $75.

    Good luck -

    ;)
