From the time the boot goes off when Im loading XP to when the login screen appears is 20 seconds-ish.

To me, this seems like a long time. At University the time when the boot screen goes off to when the login screen appears is around 3 seconds.

Although the universities XP version is Pro, and mine is Home Edition, should it really be taking that long to go from the boot screen to the login?

Is there a way I can reduce this time to go from the boot screen to the login screen?

What are your times like when loading from that screen to the login?

    Thanx in advance.

It might be taking longer than the computer at work because of the different software on the two systems. Start>Run>msconfig will tell you exactly what is trying to load at boot, and this Start Up will give you control over what loads at boot. 20 seconds for XP Home doesn't seem out of line to me, but you may be able to reduce the time by disabling any unecessary services from the boot up process.

You probably need to turn off XP's unnecessary services. It takes a little time but it's well worth it in terms of better system performance and online security...and usually a noticeable decrease in boot time.

There are numerous guides online for which services to turn off, which to set to manual and which to leave on automatic but I've found Black Viper's site the easiest to read...and the links to explanations of each service are handy.

Thanx for the replies. Had a look at that site and everything was pretty much as mine was.

Suppose I;ll just have to sit and be patient. :(

If you are on a network and much network-related stuff is loading, you will see the delay while the OS sorts out and connects to the things you have loading with your username.

Just thought I'd ressurect this post.

Ive just installed another 512DDR and the Boot Screen to Login time has drastically been reduced to about 3 seconds.

Much quicker loading, so I guess 512DDR wasn't enough for XP!! :)
