In Win95 you could tweak the registry to cause bmp images to be displayed as icons. Is there any way to do this in XP?

I'm not sure I understand...do you mean you want to display bmp images as thumbnails?

Lots of freeware out there for that job. Google using bmp to ico and you'll be set to pick and choose.

To change the properties of the bmp icon so that it displays the image that it contains, copy the text between the lines, paste it to a blank Notepad window, and save the file to your desktop as "BmpChange.reg ". Double-click it to effect the change.

    -----------------------------------Start
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\DefaultIcon]
    @= "%1 "

    -----------------------------------End

To revert back to the default:

    -----------------------------------Start
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\DefaultIcon]
    @= "shimgvw.dll,1 "

    ------------------------------------End

Knowing that quite a few of us use Irfanview, I'll throw this in too. You can use Irfanview to do this for you. Options>Properties>Extensions>Miscellaneous ;)

I don't see that option in IrfanView, Zander. He doesn't want thumbnails of the bmp's----he wants the icons of the bmp's to be thumbnails of the image they represent, but still be icons.

Do I misunderstand how to use Irfanview to do that? I jsut don't see that option.

    The option says;
Use Thumbnails for BMP's (if BMP associated)

I just double checked on mine and when I check the option my bitmap images display an icon that's a picture of the bitmap. Did you try it?
