Best free antivirus software?

I was happy with AVG until 7, but I've not been happy with AVG8.

It will do a scheduled scan every day at the same time despite having disabled the option and searching the web shows other people are having the exact same problem.

I don't want the "link scanner" or other things that make it complicated.

I want a basic virus scan that will only scan when initiate the scan and extinguish the virus action if I were to launch an infected file.
