    Hello all!

While struggling with problems on a friends computer, I took the opportunity to benchmark his HDDs.

One 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3160023AS SATA and one 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus ST3160023A PATA with 8 MB cache:

    Quick Linear Read
    SATA: 56.2 - 28.6 MB/s (44.4 MB/s avg)
    PATA: 56.2 - 26.0 MB/s (42.5 MB/s avg)

    Random Read
    SATA: 56.3 - 28.3 MB/s (44.5 MB/s avg)
    PATA: 56.1 - 25.8 MB/s (42.3 MB/s avg)

    Buffered Read
    SATA: 86.3 - 85.1 MB/s (86.2 MB/s avg)
    PATA: 81.0 - 79.6 MB/s (80.9 MB/s avg)

    Average Access
    SATA: 13.8 - 11.9 ms (12.9 ms avg)
    PATA: 16.6 - 13.8 ms (15.1 ms avg)

As I understand it, Linear Read and Random Read are internal rates of the HDD and Buffered Read is the rate of the interface.

If the value for BR is lower than for LR and RR, then the interface is the limiting component.

Since the BR is not the limiting component on neither of them, then I would say that SATA itself does not improve performance but regardless of that, it has a slightly better performance ...... ;) ...... almost as good as my 120 GB / 8 MB Hitachi 7K250!

Am I right on this ...... ......

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

(I have saved the screens but have no webspace to put them on. If anyone should want to see them just holler and I´ll mail them. Maybe Arie could put them up for me?)

Edited: Added the size of the PATA

    Hello Christer,

I've noticed several times you have mentioned having screenshots and such, but no webspace to load them. Just thought you might like to look into using one for convenience. Check out Photobucket. My wife uses it alot for ebay and likes it. :)

    Hello Dave!

Yes, I think that it has been mentioned before ...... ...... and I should be ashamed since I only have to activate a 10MB web space provided for free by my ISP. That´s however yet another learning curve to embark.

I have thought about the Webshots Community which is similar to the one You suggest and maybe it´s time to go for either one ot the other.
