have a client that has been thinking about for a while now about getting a laptop basically so she can sit in her living room and connect wireless to there xp machine in their office. i have looked at the differences between the versions of vista till im blue in the face and honestly i still dont understand the real difference between the home basic and say the business version. if xp was still available i would just get for her a laptop with xp home so am i okay to get the home basic with vista and will that give her the same abilities.

Microsoft's comparison chart is on this page.

Microsoft's chart is geared more to the "buy the better version and get more stuff to amaze and entertain." ;)

Or see my: Windows Vista: Which Edition Should You Get?

    One thing is sure:

Home Basic is useless and you should never consider it!

You should choose between Home Premium, Business or Ultimate, so in your case probably Home Premium or Business.

The main things missing from Business compared to Home Premium:

    • Parental Controls
    • Windows Media Center
    • Windows Movie Maker
    • Windows DVD Maker

The main things missing from Home Premium compared to Business:

    • Encrypting File System
    • System image backup and recovery
    • Windows ShadowCopy
    • Ability to Join domain
    • IIS Web Server
    • Offline files and folder support
    • Windows Fax and Scan
