    Hi,

I generally have no problems with my copy of Windows 98 SE with the exception that it sometimes shuts down by itself. There are no conflicts in Device Manager. It happens to shut down while I'm doing nothing at a moment or while I'm typining. As you can imagine, it can be very frustrating. After bad shutdowns Windows checks the HDD for errors.
Is there a method to check which program or hardware is in charge for the shutdowns? I mean something like "faultlog.txt ". Thanks.

The most common cause for random shutdowns is heat buildup. Fortunately, it's also pretty easy to fix.

Shut the computer down, unplug the power cord from the back (extra safety precaution) then open the case and carefully vacuum out the inside, paying special attention to the air vents and fans.

With the case open, plug the power cord back in, start the computer and make sure all the fans are running. The power supply fan is inside the power supply unit and can be checked through its air vent in the back of the case. If one (or more) isn't spinning, it will probably have to be replaced.

Miz, thanks for your hint. However, I fear it might be something more serious, because on the same PC I have Windows XP Pro running and there has been no such behavior to observe. That's why I think it must be something software related and not hardware. Yesterday I responded to the email of a friend using an online form and Windows 98 did an unexpected shutdown which was very, very frustrating.
