Hi...I upgraded from ME to XP and according to the XP book I have, it says there should be a back up utility. It's not here and I can't find it on the install disk either. It's XP Home Edition. I'm just wondering if anyone knows where it might be.....

    Thank you...:)

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition (Q302894)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

    Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    IN THIS TASK
    SUMMARY
    Manually Install the Backup Utility

    SUMMARY
The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs for Windows XP Home edition.

This article describes how to install Backup, which is included on the CD-ROM in the Valueadd folder. To use Backup, you have to install it manually.

Note : Automated System Recovery is not a supported feature in Windows XP Home Edition using Backup, but Backup is provided on the CD-ROM as additional value to help back up critical system data. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q302700 An Error Message Is Displayed When You Attempt to Use the Automated System Recovery Wizard

    Manually Install the Backup Utility
    To manually install Backup:
Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup:

    CD-ROM Drive :\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
When the wizard is complete, click Finish .

The above was excerpted from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q302894

If your CD doesn't have the VALUEADD folder, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. From what I can determine, you need to have the full retail version of the program to get that.

I have bought a 3rd party software for the purpose (Novastor Instant Recovery).

I think it stinks that MS has chosen this path since it's an adulteration of the product. They could have added a couple bucks to the price and delivered the full product rather than driving people to 3rd party providers.

The upside is, NovaStor can clone the system and beat the often inconvenient Product Activation MS incorporated into XP.
