here some antivirus file scan numbers, from two different AV's on the very same operating system, performed just minutes apart (yesterday)....

Norton AntiVirus 2003 scanned 66,806 files

Kaspersky AntiVirus 4.0 scanned 123,764 files

NAV has "Comprehensive file scanning" selected, as well as "Scan within compressed files "

NAV has 63,420 definitions in its database

KAV has 66,629 definitions in its database

my conclusion is that Kaspersky's unpacking engines are really digging deep and Norton is not. but the difference between the two AVs in number of files scanned is huge. can anyone offer any ideas on why this disparity?

    :)

Could it be that one is reporting a scanned Zip/Cab/etc file as one scan and the other is reporting the total contents of the compressed file as one scan each item within the compression wrapper?

i'm inclined to agree with you, newt. especially given the vast difference in numbers. i keep hearing how much more thorough KAV is than NAV when it comes to scanning within packed files, but this alone couldn't account for the huge differential, could it?

    oh, the puzzles of life....
