If I plug my digital camera on USB port, some weeks ago I would have a new screen of auto-play function asking me what to do with the pictures, now nothing happens, here what I tried with no success (at that time I was SP1 and now SP2 with same results)
I pluged the device into my PC, went to My Computer. Under the section "Devices with removeable storage" I selected your new USB device ( f:) and rightclick on it. Went to Properties and select the autoplay tab then click on the button under "Actions" to "Select an action to perform ". Select Pictures from the drop down box above, and select the top option "copy pictures to a folder on my computer using Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" and select Apply then OK. It seem to take it, but it always come back to audio files..

How can I modify auto-play adequately.....

    Hello JCL,

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and scroll down to autoplay, see if anything there that helps with troubleshooting. Seems that you did everthing right, but from experience, the settings seem to have a hard time sticking.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi JCL,

    Don't do anything with it.

This may be a USB issue. Perhaps someone with experience with a camera can address the problem.

From my reading of your first post, this problem pre-dates SP2, is that correct?

Time to run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > Type in sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP install CD handy. SFC will run and exit - to see which files, if any have been replaced look in Event Viewer.

Failing that you could remove the USB controllers through Device Manager and reboot to let Windows install them again.

    Hi JCL,

A large bit afraid of removing the USB controllers through Device Manager and reboot to let Windows install them again.

Ok, do the following: if you have System Restore enabled, create a manual checkpoint prior to uninstalling the USB contollers.

If you don't know how: click on Help and Support in the start menu and in the search box type System Restore. Info on where it is, how it works, and how to create a user checkpoint. That checkpoint can be used to roll back the OS to prior you maiking any changes to it.

    Regards - Charles

Maybe there is a conflict between your camera downloading software and Autoplay. Try an uninstall of the camera software and see if Autoplay 'plays ball'.

BTW with my Canon EOS 10D and S50 plugging either camera into the PC via the lead opens up the camera software - not a hint of autoplay :)

Does Autoplay work for, say, a data CD? If so the problem lies with the camera connection/software and not Autoplay itself.

If you put the CF card or whatever card your camera uses into a USB card reader does Autoplay work?

Don't have a USB card reader, but with other Xd, card same situation exist.

Sorry - I was not clear :( When I said data CD I did not mean a program CD with an autorun.inf file aboard or a music CD. A simple data CD containing a series of files - the one I showed contained 2 folders and 125 jpegs not in a folder.

If I put a blank CD, auto-play comes on asking me what to to do, that is OK

If I put a data+photo recorded CD auto-play comes on asking me what to do, that is OK.

But same situation exist, if I plug my Olympus 740 with Xd card, auto-play doesn't come on.

I think that indicates a problem/conflict with the camera software rather than USB, etc. - have you checked out the Olympus site for updated software/drivers?

As I posted previously with the camera software installed I would not expect Autoplay to pop up - based on my experience of Canon, Nikon and Kodak cameras.

Well, up to 3-4 weeks ago It did work, I sent e-mail to Olympus between then and now and their response was:

"Windows camera and scanner wizard is a Microsoft application, please refer to Microsoft help for assistance with your request ".

I will keep on digging, if any new idea come around, I'm listening

thank you all, for all your time....meanwhile I have learned somethings

    thanks again
