Having finally solved the problems of how to use Audacity (vinyl to cd) i went and upgraded to an Audigy Sound Blaster 7.1 sound card and although the new sound card works great but when it's used with Audacity the sound quality is awful. Could anyone help me out here please. Thanks

    Hello Boomble,

Provided there is nothing wrong with the card, then it may be that the volume of the Line input is too high and causing clipping.

    Regards - Charles

5.1 Sound Card means 5 speakers
7.1 Sound Card means 7 speakers
Be sure to select the speakers setup either in audacity or in windows.

IMHO, 2.1 is enough for listening to music, 2 speakers & a subwoofer.
I am not a comp game player, but from what I've read 5.1 is great for games IF the 5 speakers are positioned properly. Some gamers say that properly positioned speakers "alert you to the enemy better ".

The point is this: having a sound card that outputs 7 different channels won't do much good if you don't have 7 speakers. Perhaps the sound quality you refer to above may be due to forcing 7 channels into 2, or only using 2/7th of the cards capabilities.

My knowledge is limited in multichannel recording, but my assumption your source output (vinyl) is stereo, which is two channel (possible mono if old records). Not sure how your 7.1 card inputs these two channel into Audacity. I would check your sound card for any specific settings / requirements base on input source and how many channels are provided. My assumption, if two channels can be properly presented to the recording session, your 7.1 sound card should have enough built in smarts to simulate (output) acceptable sound/music. Just for a test, take one of your vinyl to CD burns and play it on a two speaker system. If it sounds good, input/out from Audacity is not the problem.
