I'm using WinXP Media Edition and backed up my PC to an exeternal HD (USB) for the first time. That operation seemed to go OK, but at the end of the backup I got an error message about not being able to create an ASR diskette and that I wouldn't be able to use the backup. I read a little of MS Knowedge on ASR that said it was for only WinXP Pro and needed a A floppy drive. I have neither - can't imagine any new PC with a floppy drive?? My question is: Will the backup that I created on an external HD work if I need to restore my PC? Will appreciate any help and suggestions.

jeffrja - Welcome to the Board :)
No - the floppy is needed - amongst other things it includes the Setup log which an Automated System Recovery needs to refer to.

Your best way of backing up your system is to use a third party program such as Acronis True Image or Ghost to create an image of the drive - this can be located on an external drive.

Floppy drives are a rarity these days, but bear in mind that XP has been around a bit and has now been superseded by Vista in which I believe the backup function works differently.
