    Hello all. I am running Windows XP Pro w/SP2. My system never came with a recovery cd or a windows cd. The 160Gb Hdd, is the primary Hdd w/Windows installed, came from my older system. My system has no memory problems(4 gigs) and has 1.5 Terabytes of HDD, 1-160GB, 2-200GB, and a 1 Tera, an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ Black Edition 3.22GHz w/ Hyper 48 cooler, on a GigaBit motherboard, and a Pilat 1GB PCIe video card. I have been gone for the past 1 1/2 months, so I had no idea about this until 4 days ago.

    The problem is, for over a month my wife has been getting a screen asking to choose between Windows XP Pro (bootscreen) or Windows XP Pro

    The boot.ini looks like this:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional (bootscreen)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

    I am not sure which line to delete. I only have Windows XP Pro installed once on the system. My wife installed StyleXP about 9 - 10 months ago. we never used the bootscreen changing part of that program. My SON..:mad:..(17yrs old & thinks HE knows everything) tried to change the boot screen, and this started happening. Thank you all for any help.

    I'd delete the first one, ie

    Code:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional bootscreen)" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer /KERNEL=kernel1.exe

    But make sure you can boot the system enough so you can add that
    Code:
    /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
    switch if needed.

    To be fair on your son he hasn't done any damage at least the original boot config has been preserved. ;)

    A lot better thanks :D

    Another line in the boot.ini to consider (since you mentioned start up time) is the

    Code:
    timeout=30
    This is a countdown in seconds and if it were only the timing issue that were a problem you could reduce it.

    I have the recovery console installed on this system and I set my timeout to 5, long enough to catch the option but not too long to annoy me during boot.
