I have Windows ME. What are administrator rights? How does one invoke administrator rights on a single user computer (i.e. promote oneself to an administrator)?

    Kind regards,
    Pat

What exactly are you trying to do ?
What makes you ask about administrator rights in windows ME? Are you getting an error?
ME is a dos based OS and does not have different privelege (permission) levels like the NT based OS such as Win2k and XP.
Likewise, it does not have an adminsitrator account; all accounts are equal in power and permission unless you have installed third party management software to prevent users from installing things or altering settings.

Oshwyn, the reason I asked the question is that I downloaded some freeware called "OpenOffice" and in the 'Read Me' text it said, "Note: Please be aware that administrator rights are needed for the installation process ". Not having a clue what this meant I immediately promoted myself to administrator and downloaded it successfully. Does that mean I am now an administrator? :)

    Kind regards,
    Pat

In ME all users are administrators. XP is based on NT which was designed for offices. There are different types of users; guests, power users, administrators etc . In XP , you can grant someone a guest account where they can go online to check email, but cannot install programs for example. Not so in ME, all users are administrators. What they were referring to was that if you were operating on a windows XP machine , you would have to log in to an administrator account to install the software.

Thankyou Oshwyn, that explains it perfectly even if it does mean that my celebrity status as an Administrator has to be shared with the hoi polloi. :(

    Kind regards,
    Pat
