I don't understand the display formatting of the OE address book

However, I want to find a name, for example, Bob. I know it's there and if it is formatted so that Jones, Bob is the display, it will not FIND Bob. If I don't remember the last name is Jones, I cannot find it without scrolling thru the whole thing --- OR is there a way?

Edit old Bob Jones and see if you have for example his first or last name as Bob Jones. If so, you'll have to put the name in the right place.

That isn't a solution. For one, I don't remembeb Bob's last name. If I did, I could search for either last or first name. There should be way to search for the name BOB anywhere in the name.

tenbob--My Address Book has a line about 1/3 the way down (just over the address list itself) that reads "Type Name or Select from List ". If I type either first or last names, it will find them.
Also just clicking on the word "Name" at the head of the list of names will rearrange the list several different ways. One might help you find Bob.

If I enter Bob, it will find all the Bobs that exist if their names are entered as: Bob Jones, Bob Smith, Bob Carpenter etc.

However, it will not find any if they are entered; Jones, Bob Smith, Bob Carpernter, Bob

Clicking on NAME will sort the column alphabetically forward or reverse with the standard Windows mechanism. that is:

    Alice Flooby
    Bob Carpenter
    Bob Jones
    Bob Smith
    Joe Alba
    OR

    Joe Alba
    Bob Smith
    Bob Jones
    Bob Carpenter
    Alice Flooby

tenbob--Think you will find a third option when you click Name.
Not clear whether you are happy with the first suggestion or not. Works for me.

Double click on anyones name and go to the name tab.

    First_________Middle__________Last____________

Does the "first name" say Bob or does it say Bob Jones?

Geeezz. If the first name says Bob Jones you need to fix it.

    Tenbob,

This is the way mine works.

Right click on the name column.

    Select Find people.

Type Ann in the name box.

Returns all "Danny ", "Ann ", "Gnann" addresses.

As you can see it finds any ann whether as a separate name or as part of a first or last name.

I'm using OE6 sp1 on Win XP pro.

tenbob--Adding to Bmoore1129's suggestion. "Find People" is available from two other places in the Address Book window.
1)the Toolbar should have the option "Find People" and
2)you can also access it from Edit|Find People.
Bmoore1129 did not mention that in the line "Look In" in the Find People window you choose Address Book from the drop down menu.
Then as Bmoore1129 has said type in the name you want to find in the People|Name line. Click Find Now. Should give you all names in the Address Book containing what you typed in the Name line.

Thanks - of course that worked.

It only highlights a basic fault in OE. The user is expected to use his own brain and eyes. That "Find People" is right in front of me and I didn't see it

    Thanks to both of you

tenbob--You're welcome. We all learned. It is sad but true that OE's Help function does not explain this.
