I've noticed that when I install a program that is not XP compatable, add remove programs will not uninstall it. This has happened twice, and I've had to remove it myself. When I go to the program I want to remove, I click the remove button and it gives me a set-up screen. Anybody else have this problem?

Do you mean programs you have to run in compatibility mode? And later want to remove?

Or programs that won't run at all?

When I've encountered the setup screen when trying to remove a program, I've eventually (by clicking "Ok" or "Yes" or "Continue," whatever the "Get On With It" button says), gotten to a window that gives me the option to uninstall. Some software writers want to make sure you intend to uninstall...or don't want you to uninstall their precious program...so you get to jump through a few hoops first.

I mean programs that won't run at all. For instance MS Office 97 and software for HP cd writer 9500 series. When I installed the cd software it told me a driver would not be installed as it would cause system instability, but the program actually worked, until the next morning when I couldn't get the system to boot up. Tried to remove it with add remove, wouldn't work, so I used system restore. Removed MS Office myself.

Most pure applications will run if you select the compatibility mode that fits them.

Hardware drivers where you are told they may/will cause system instability are probably not a very good idea.

Programs that don't load correctly very likely don't register themselves properly so the normal uninstall just can't work.
