    Hi There,
I am trying to fix a friends computer with XP all connections are ok but the network card keeps on showing acquiring network address on checking i found that some services that are required to be on are off such as DNS client when tried to start that i get error message "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start" how to fix this.
    2. during checking the services i changed the RPC log on to local system account but realized that it shoud be left to NT Authority\NetworkServices but that window is now grayed out how can i fix that? can that interfere in connecting the home PC to internet through wired ethernet connection to DSL modem.

    Would appreciate the help.

Probably a good place to start is here depending on your service pack set all services to default and restart the system (don't worry about failing to start whilst you set them).

Once you've done that you may want to tweak them for your friend's particular requirements.

Just in case some files have become corrupted an XP CD may be neccessary.

    Control Panel in Classic view:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Scroll down to the service you want and double click on it (or right click and select Properties).

Set the "Startup type" to Automatic.

However, it is very likely that these settings will only be wrong if someone has been playing and manually altered the settings. If this is the case, you've got an easy task of simply setting them back to automatic.

On the other hand, I think it far more like that the problem isn't the setting but rather that the service isn't able to start because it is faulty or something else is preventing it starting. In this case it could well be harder to fix.

One of other things you can do within the Service screens is manually start a service. Try that on the services you need and ensure that you can start them successfully. If not, post back the error message.

    Thanks guys,
Infact I tried to reset the settings from command prompt using ipconfig /reset which then gave me the error message that RPC server unavailable, which when i checked was already on later on further digging into the problem i found that other services i.e. DHCP client and DNS client should be running too which were not found to be running and when i tried to start these services i got the error message "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start" so now the status is that i am not able to start these services which i guess are required for connecting to net.
about the service pack i will check it and tell that.
    thanks

I have also run winsockfix but couldn't resolve the problem it was during setting these services that i changed RPC log on option too which i realized later on that it should be set to NT Authority\NetworkServices but that option is now grayed out so just can't figure out and i also dont know if this change in RPC log on would affect internet connectivity if other services are set to default.
