One, can the active X plugin for Netscape 7.1 be modified to download windows updates from the windows update site at www.windowsupdate.com?

Second question. I'm using a browser based on mozilla 1.0.2, I realize there are newer features in the 1.4 release of mozilla, but are there many other differences in terms of security? or is 1.0.2 still very secure?

    Hi Kevin,

The answer to your first question is no. Windows Update uses VBScript, in addition to ActiveX, and to date only IE can be used with Windows Update.

    The Mozilla ActiveX Project's Motivation:

"Wouldn't it be great if the Mozilla browser engine were an Active control that could be embedded as in applications? "

That's a question that myself and others had asked on the Mozilla groups soon after the Mozilla project began. And further:

"Wouldn't it be great if the Mozilla control used the same API as the Internet Explorer control? "

The aim of this project is to be both of these things.

    Why?

Previous versions of Netscape Communicator/Navigator were arguably superior to IE as day to day browsers but they suffered through their immediate usability and modularity. Although the Netscape browser was great as a standalone application, it wasn't possible to utilize that functionality in third party applications. On the other hand, Internet Explorer shipped with an ActiveX control which allowed exactly that ability.

This pretty well sums up the project's goals.

To answer your second question: Mozilla 1.4 has no major security improvements over Release 1.02.
