Help! I am running XP. Netscape 7.02 keeps re-installing itself every few days or every few weeks. (twice already today). I had this problem with 7.00 and thought 7.02 would help. Through edit-preferences-advanced-software I have instructed it not to allow or check for downloads. I have gotten very good at copying my archieved e-mails because of this. How can I stop this?????

    Welcome to the Forum, Web64!

    Hi Web64,

Are you saying that Netscape 7.02 does not retain the Software Installation settings? In what way does Netscape reinstall itself?

I have seen other Windows XP users report that their Preferences have disappeared on startup. Could this be what you are describing?

Give us more details so we can help you solve this problem.

When I start the computer I get a page welcoming me to Netscape and that I have complete a successful download. It asks me if I want to become a member. I always cancel that screen and go into Netscape. I do not see any download progress box. It just welcomes me and wipes out all of my settings.

    Hi Web64,

Thanks for the info, and that helps a lot in determining what could be wrong.

To get rid of the "Welcome to Netscape" window:
    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups
Disable: "Mail Start Page" and delete whatever is in the Location bar.

Somehow, in Windows XP, Netscape seems to lose its pointer. There are several workarounds, so I have created a page, listing them:
Lost Profile - Mail Settings - Windows XP

Try the workarounds, one by one, and then post back with results.

    Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions. I have some questions.... Netscape welcomed be again this morning. The welcome message title is: Netscape Network Registration .... Welcome to Netscape 7.0 and it wants me to log in for member benefits.

Your suggestions yesterday ended with asking me to create a new profile. Isn't this what Netscape is doing each time?

Please let me know if the suggestions from yesterday are still appropriate and I will follow them.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Web64,

To rid yourelf of the annoying Registration greeting, do a "Find" for the registration.dll file, and delete it.

Yes, you should proceed with the workarounds recommended yesterday.
Netscape isn't creating a new Profile, it is for some reason unable to find the existing Profile. The workarounds are to point Netscape back to the Profile. However, if that fails, then creating a new Profile can often help.

Backing up your Profiles folder frequently is a good idea. Once you have a working Profile, and have backed it up, if you encounter this problem again, try replacing the prefs.js file with your "good" backup.

I work with a computer repair shop and we've had this problem turn up at least three times in the past month - and not with Win XP.

In each case the user has Netscape 7.01 and Win 98 SE, and the profile has been wiped out after having used Netscape for months without a problem. The welcome screen is just kind of the final insult.

I assume this fix will help, but has anybody got any idea why this is suddenly happening? My first thought was some weird new anti-Netscape virus, but that sounds pretty farfetched.

    Welcome to the Forum, Bentley!

    Hi bentley,

I have found no definitive answer for your question. On the Netscape Newsgroups, it has been suggested that somehow Netscape loses it's pointer, thus losing the Profile. It has also been suggested that crashes in Netscape tend to easily corrupt the Profile.

I wish I had an answer for you...
