Seems like, every once in a while, Win7, during bootup is trying
    to run through 15,697 updates.
What is it really doing? I'm assuming that it is scanning for missing
updates and making sure the system is up-to-date (or checking to see
    what updates are missing).

    Thanks,
    savagcl

Hi clif. You could have a few missing updates but I find it very strange that Windows 7 runs through 15,000 updates. Something isn't right there.

Does the Windows 7 computer have Service Pack 1 installed? When you go to Start< All Programs< Windows Update is Windows up to date with the latest patches?

How often does the system run through this so called update process? Have you noticed any other weird system problems or is this the only strange issue that you have been experiencing?

I believe even MS has not issued 15000+ updates for Win7. So there is no way your system could be scanning for these updates.

Just got a similar startup message after the latest batch of updates, 13 in my case (it's not installing 15k+ though, just scanning )

From what I can tell it's a one off message and can be safely ignored (I've rebooted the system several times since without issue). Clif, have you seen this more than once?

From previous posts and albeit limited information this appears to be a win 7 64bit query, anyone else care to input?

Yes - it is a Win 7 x64 bit phenomenon (I run 7 Pro x64) - I noted it after installing updates on the last 2 Patch Tuesdays. As I recall the on screen message referred to Registry Entries - checking and I think the figure was 15,334. They are not updates!!

It did not occur on 7 Pro x32 or on HP x32.

I certainly did not lose any sleep over it :) Both sets of patches had core updates for x64.

Yes, I have SP1 and no outstanding updates.
Inclined to agree with above post - it goes to fast to really be updating.

Maybe bi-monthly its running. Could be checking if all updates have
    been applied.....

    thanks for the feedback,

So do we have Registry Checker in Win 7 64 bit ? That's a new feature I guess.

Yesterday I updated a friend's 7 x64 with last Tuesday's updates and was able to note down the screen message on restart which was .....

    Applying Update Operation
    15601 (Registry/......)

The remainder of the message was off screen to the right.
