No offence, but I'd think it would have to be externally powered, even the lowest LCD's require 50-60watts and you won't get that from a USB port....
Exactly, it's an intricate job and not worthwhile unless you have a reasonable chance of success. FWIW I wouldn't recommend this if someone needed...

Unlikely, it does look like your HD has failed however, you could try going into the BIOS and looking for options such as "failsafe defaults" etc...
Consider going to 2.5 - 3 GB, you will see a big improvement with 1.5GB and if you don't use the extra RAM (which TBH is pennies/cents nowadays)...
What OS and how hard does it work? XP (and most Linux) ... Reasonable improvement if you're multitasking fairly heavily. Vista... Large...
