I bought a new HP desktop Sept. 2021 and it had Windows 10. HP said I could update to Windows 11, so I did. For the last few days a red dot with arrows at the bottom of my screen says that "Your version of Windows 11 has reached end of service. Click to downloada newer version of Windows 11 to stay supported." When clicked on it goes to settings, windows update, but there are no options to download a new version and I cannot find a way to update. I thought I was getting all updates needed through Windows update agreeing to automatic updates over the years. Does anyone have a solution to getting the new versions from 2022 and 2023? Thank you.

Just an update to what I posted. I thought by using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant which said it could update my system with the latest update would work for my missing versions. DON'T DO IT!!! I could not even get the computer to come on, it kept trying to start and then would shut down. Thought I was going to have to buy a new computer, but used the escape button pressed repeatedly to enter the bios and got to the troublesolving menu. I then used Macrium Reflect to recover. I was so grateful and relieved when the desktop showed up. I still have the Windows 11 version 21H2 that I am using, but unless someone more knowledgeable that I can enlighten me on how to get even the version 22H2 to download I will put up with the red dot and arrows at the bottom of the screen and lose my support for Windows 11.

Hi, What happens when you use Windows Update?
My comp was Updated to 24H2 by WU on 24/11/2024.
I have been on Auto Update for years and never had any problems.
I always close any work and allow Updates to install without confusion and use my Smart phone while this action is taking place.

Thank you so much "retiredlearner" for replying. You have helped me before and I appreciate any help you can give me.
I tried to use windows update and it said there were security updates needed, but nothing was listed as an update to download when checking for updates. It just shows the same message. I wish I could copy and paste the message at the top of the screen in settings to show you what I have, but computer won't give me that option. I have always had windows update on automatic forever, too. I was disappointed because I thought since I had changed to Windows 11 that all updates would automatically come into the computer. I have a whole list that came in during 2022, 2023, and 2024; but not the updates for the OS. If I click on advanced options there are only ones for logitech and other software updates for programs I have added. I think the needed security updates they are stating are the ones for Vers. 2022 and 2023 H2s and won't download because I don't have those versions. If I had those updates, then I am sure that Version 24H2 would automatically download.

Hi Mary651, I'll do some checking and get back to you.
Have you tried > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update?

    This is worth reading through:Redirecting
Note the advice about 3rd Party AntiVirus and to disconnect from the Internet.
Microsoft Defender will protect your system during this operation
The advice about disconnecting any peripherals (printers any plug in USB devices except mouse and keyboard,) can be very critical during this operation.
Once the update has been successfully installed, you will need to reinstall your Internet and get all necessary Security updates.

Thank you retiredlearner for the advice. I have been talking to the Microsoft support people and they have tried many things, but when the install needs to restart I get an error message "0xC1900101 0X40017 Failed in the Second_Boot phase with an error Boot Operation". There was also a list of things I could do to make the install easier, but there was nothing about disconnecting from the internet before trying to install again. I have tried with the help from Microsoft support techs and what is bad about using them is they are all over the world, once you have to restart the computer contact is lost and you cannot get back to the same person to follow up. It is just the way Microsoft has it set up, so it is pretty impossible to continue with the same person. I have tried to install the ISO file that is downloaded into my computer three times and failed every time. I will try to disconnect from the internet and see if that works. I already have third party anti virus programs uninstalled, so if I can just disconnect from the internet we will see if it will work. I will keep you informed.

    Hi,

If you can't get the latest version of Windows 11 to install, then follow these instructions to create a Windows 11 USB Flash Drive, How to make a Windows 11 bootable USB.

Then with your updated Windows 11 flash drive created you can try performing a clean install of Windows 11, Clean Install Windows 11.

I have had family home for several days, so could not followup with you. Did not have time to try to install without the internet until today. It failed as well, no difference. Thought that maybe it might be some drivers causing the problem, so went to hp.com and updated all of the drivers for my system hoping that this was the solution. Still getting the same error message. I will try Evan Omo's suggestion, but cannot clean install windows as I have too many documents and programs that it would delete. I have no discs to put my Excel Suite back on which I need for my church work. I will keep you posted. Not sure what I could try next.

    Evan,
Thank you for responding to my forum question. I am not that skilled in computers to do a clean installation of Windows 11. I need to keep my documents and programs as I have no disc for my Excel Suite which I need for my Financial Secretary work for the church. I was curious to see on the links you supplied that in one place it said that you could repair Windows 11. Is that a possibility to try?

    Hi Mary, Happy New Year.
When you go into Settings > System > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Do you see Additional Options to > Recovery > You have a number of Options to try where you can preserve your Files and Data etc. while Resetting or Repairing your OS.

Thanks, retiredlearner. I just went into Recovery to see what it said, but it would delete my Excel/Word programs and I do not have a disc as I purchased it online at PC Sales Online and it was just a download. I did a search online for the error message with all of the numbers and words. It pulled up something from "The Windows Club" by Obinna. Using the Registry, it said to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CtxMcsWbc and disable Citrix MCS by changing the value from 0 to 4. The problem was that the CtxNcsWbc was not listed in the line after Services. Then there was another step to delete the same in the UpperFilters value. This Citrix(VDA) is preventing the upgrade from writing changes to the disk and triggers the system rollback. Could you look at this website and give me your opinion as to if this is a viable solution?

Hi Mary, after reading articles about Citrix MCS, it would appear to be an APP which can be uninstalled.
If this is causing your problems, it would be wise to uninstall the App which should then allow Windows Update to work.
Your safest move would be to try and clone your Hard drive to a USB Thumb drive of adequate capacity first.
You don't state whether your Excel/Word software is MS or 3rd party?
MS Office Excel/Word will be able to be re-installed as there is a product key supplied to Activate it.
I have done this in the past when I have purchased a digital download of say 2019 MS Office Student and Home.

Yes you can definitely try repairing Windows 11 using the method outlined here, Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If repairing Windows 11 does not allow you to update Windows 11 to the latest version then performing a clean install will be the last resort.

Thank you Evan, I will try this. I have a laptop that I don't use very much. Was bought in 2019 to use when traveling. Checked the version of OS and found version 21H2 same as desktop. Downloaded the IOS file and it installed with no problem. Don't understand why so much trouble with desktop.

I started the fix with reinstall using Windows Update, but the option is not there to use Windows update as my version is Windows 11 21H2. I will continue to find a solution without losing my programs. I have external harddrives to use for backup for my documents, but it is the programs I use that I do not want to lose. Is there a way to save programs to an external HD?

No unfortunately there is not as programs install themselves in multiple directories and rely on certain Windows files to function. You cannot just copy the program files onto an external hard drive and copy it back onto a clean Windows installation and have it work.

You can follow this guide for repairing your Windows 11 installation by running a few repair commands but I don't have high hopes that this will repair your installation, Having issues with Windows 11? Try these steps to repair it.

Thank you, Evan. I appreciate all you and Retired Learner have tried to help me with. I need to make a decision on what to do next. List the programs I have and find out if I can reinstall some of them or find them again to download. It will be a big job to do that, but I think I will wait awhile as I have several things I need to do this month. Next month would be better. I have bookmarked the link that you sent, so I will have it. My research on the error message seems to point to a driver problem. I have been to hp.com and downloaded drivers that were available for the computer. Also used a diagnostic troubleshooter, but it said I needed to update my BIOS. After the update, I had several websites that had blocked me including this one and my Thunderbird email program. Had to restore the computer back to the day before to change it back.

Sorry, I did not realize I had not responded to this message. It is the 2019 MS Office Excel/Word, so is an official Microsoft, so there should be a product key. I am going to wait until next month before working on this again. I have tried to install the New Windows 11 IOS download 5 times with failure each time. If you read my posts above, I have basically tried many things, but still have to see if I can followup on the Citrix connection.

For Evan and RetiredLearner: Would it be too much to ask if you both could take a look at this webpage which in the little video tells how to alter the Citrix VDA? I would like your opinions as to whether I should try it or not.
