I wish when this does happen, some logging of some sort would occur to give us a clue as to why it failed without notice. Was there a power surge? Did the drive's on board interface fail? Did an actual memory module fail? We have no clue or understanding if it was preventable or not. For example, if a surge, we might know to replace the PSU before something catastrophic happened. Or to put the computer on a good UPS with AVR.

That said, when something fails suddenly without notice, it is likely there is no time for the system to make a log entry.

    Yea, indeed.

My system is on UPS with AVR, so probably not power related... but that's about all.

Same here. But then again, a PSU, even one supported by a good UPS, can fail and potentially damage connected devices. This would be rare with today's modern PSUs as they tend to simply, and quickly shutdown output when a problem is detected - assuming a 1/2 way decent PSU. But nothing is perfect so still possible.

    I do!

But still, until Man can create perfection 100% of the time, even the best models from the best makers can have a unit that fails prematurely. But again, in those cases, typically output is quickly terminated before damage to connected occurs - at least that's the hopes, if nothing else.

Any electronic item can fail any time with or without warning. That's why its important to have backup of your data. Remember, HDD/SDD's are (relatively) cheap and replaceable but not your data.

Yea, I have backups, but it was quite inconvenient having to wait for my replacement drive to arrive... would be even a larger PITA if my system drive died (NVMe)...
