I scheduled the last W10 update to occur at 2am a week or so ago. When I checked at 7am it was still trying to complete... obviously hung up. I restarted the PC and received a message saying the update did not complete and would try again. That's when I discovered that my sound didn't work. I waited until the next day after the update completed successfully and tried again, but it was still not working. I tried the automatic troubleshooting tool, but it couldn't help. Reinstalled driver and even removed an reinstalled the sound card (Asus Xonar SE), but still no sound. The speakers are ok because if I turn the power to them off and on I hear them pop.
    Ideas?

Hi, a simple test would be to run sfc /scannow
In W10 > RIGHT click Start > click on PowerShell (Admin) > Paste or Type above text > Enter.
When finished, you will know all System Files are OK.

Sometimes an update may effect the Sound by Muting in Default.

Good suggestion, but the file checker didn't find any problems. Mute is not on, either.

November 9, 2021—KB5007186 (OS Builds 19041.1348, 19042.1348, and 19043.1348) is the last update I received, but oddly enough, it doesn't show as failed and re-installed. All updates in the list show successful. I don't know what's going on.

Can you restore your system to previous System Restore point before the problem began?

Well, I only had 1 restore point from before the update and it failed. Good suggestion, though.

We are shooting in the dark here. Apart from telling us that your sound card is Asus Xonar SE we know nothing about your comp.
What version of W10? Home, Pro, S?? Was it an Upgrade from earlier OS?
Branded Model, Custom build, Home build?
    How old?
There may be help on a manufacturers site -- if we knew the Model to check.

OK, it's the home version of W10, version 20H2. Was not an upgrade from an older version. I installed it when I turned up my home built PC around March of 2020. I have a Logitech 5.1 speaker system plugged into the Xonar, but it appears to by working, as I hear 'pop' when I turn it off & on (the speaker system has it's own volume and power controls). I do have another speaker system that I was going to install so I can try that, but I don't have another sound card.
Sorry about the late reply. Busy time of year, ya know.
Something I just thought of... when I physically uninstalled and reinstalled the sound board, I never saw any indication that the system discovered new hardware and was installing it. Maybe because it was installed from before? Dunno... what do you think? Soundboard coincidentally went bad when W10 was updated?

    What Motherboard/Make/Model?
Have you got builtin sound chip?
Have you tried an alternate system?

Thanks. I'll check it out as soon as I get the chance. Wife's been working from home and using the PC since Covid and I've not much time to work on this. I have, however, recently remembered that I have my old PC still tucked away with a good Sound Blaster in it. Gonna try it, too. Merry Christmas, or happy holidays... whichever you prefer.

Hi SCFrance, Merry Xmas and Holidays to you. I have experienced a reason why this new build comp I have has a re-manufactured Gigabyte X570 Motherboard.
I purchased the board on the understanding it had a problem with the previous owner. But it was sold through the Nationwide reselling agent with a 6 months warranty.
Murphie's Law kicked in a couple of days ago and I lost sound output. Obviously this was why it was re-manufactured!!

Cut a long story short, I have been trying to purchase a Sound card which will work in Windows11, hence the link I found and posted.
None of the name brands of internal or external sound cards/units can say categorically that their product will operate in a Windows11 environment as they have not produced signed off Drivers that MS accepts.
I may be operating a quiet computer for a while until I can find Windows11 approved drivers.
This may be the answer as to why your Asus Xonar SE card wont work properly!! DRIVER PROBLEM.
I'll inform you if I have any luck with my sound problem. Cheers.

Just a little update: I pulled the soundcard with the intention of installing my old PC's card, but the old one is PCI and the new is a PCIe. Unfortunately the only slot I have available is the PCIe slot the suspect card came out of. So I plugged the speakers into the MB's sound ports and they worked, just not 5.1, so I know the speaker system is good. Powered down and reinstalled the suspect card and when it came up, it didn't act like it was reinstalling the card. No "new hdw found" message or anything. I'm starting to believe the darn card went bad. Odd that it happened right when MS had an update, but I suppose it could happen. If no one comes up with any better suggestions, I'm gonna buy a new soundcard after the holidays.

As I Posted earlier, be careful with purchasing a new sound card as there are none currently available with Windows11 drivers!!
