Hi guys, I picked up a 1gen google wifi mesh 3 pack and want to hook it up. I watched videos about getting started, but what about my Dell w-7 laptop. I have an old Netgear WNR1000v2 router I am using now, what do I need to change on my laptop, if anything. I want to be able to use the old router set up, just in case the I run into problems setting up the google mesh via my phone. I am 73 now and just don't remember things like I used to.

Do I need to set up a whole new network connection?

    Thank you

The mesh system is its own router so you will have to set up the new wifi network. If you have problems you can still roll back to the Netgear because your laptop will remember the wifi connection settings.

Set up for the mesh is simple:
    https://store.google.com/us/product/google_wifi_learn

    Tips:
The google instructions tell you to start by connecting the 1st device to your existing modem. Presently, your Netgear is connected to the modem. So the VERY FIRST thing to do is to unplug the Netgear router and remove the CAT5 cable from the netgear.. Then unplug the modem. Both must be powered OFF completely.

Then plug the modem back in and wait about 1 minute for it to synchronize with your Internet provider network. May take less time, may take more.

When it has synchronized, then start the google instructions to connect the 1st mesh device with the modem. It will synchronize with the modem.

The reason you must do it this way is because if you just disconnect the Netgear and connect the mesh it won't work because the modem will remain synchronized with the Netgear.

This method ensures fresh brand new connections.

Thank you so much Tony, I completely forgot to ask, what about my desktop computer. Now it's modem to router via ethernet>out or router> to desktop, just to be able to get a internet connection for the desktop.

I did if I do this configuration, I read the other ports on the the system will not work, in case I wanted to plug something else in one of them. That is fine with me because I not see any need to do that. Can I connect the first one in this manner to my desktop for now and maybe later get a un-managed switch later to feed the desk top and 1st device.

Videos I have watch really do not show much about setting it up in this manner, just the mention of the ports not being able to work on the other two as I stated above.

    Thank you, Gary

If you do that, we won't know what was tried and not tried when you come back. Just saying.

What exact wifi card do you have? Brand, model#, etc. Look in device manager. And what exact brand and model laptop?

Hi Tony, have been ill for awhile, I just got my Google Mesh set up yesterday, very easy once I got go going. speeds are up on all devices that are 2.4/5Ghz but my laptop is only 2.4Ghz & the speed has not changed. At first I thought the Dell Wireless 1704 802.11 b/g/n 2,4 Ghz Broadcom network adapter was limiting my DL speed, I am still getting around 40mbps DL/12mbps UL. The rest of my devices are 200mbps DL/12mbps UL. I have scoured the internet and can't find any hard numbers on what the DL speed should be with the Broadcom NA. On my desk top I am getting around 90mbps DL I am paying for 100mbps, I guess getting half via wireless as opposed to an ethernet connection seem logical.
