Don't know if this is in the right place but I can't log onto my HP laptop ( windows 10 ) where it ask for my password to log onto the laptop. All this happened after i updated what i thought was a windows update. After the update i tried login on and kept getting back incorrect password. And also it won't let me reset the password at all.

Does your laptop boot into Windows OS or is it trying to?
    2. Interrupt the normal boot process of Windows 10 three times in a row
If Windows 10 fails to boot normally three times over, the fourth time it enters by default in an Automatic Repair mode. Using this mode, you can boot into Safe Mode. To trigger the Automatic Repair mode, you must interrupt the normal boot process three consecutive times: use the Reset or the Power button on your Windows 10 PC to stop it during boot, before it finishes loading Windows 10. If you use the Power button, you might have to keep it pressed for at least 4 seconds to force the power off. When Windows 10 enters the Automatic Repair mode, the first thing you see is a screen that tells you that the operating system is "Preparing Automatic Repair."
This is the tricky one that seems to work.
    Have you tried this method?
If you have a dodgy HDD or corrupt SFC.
Did you make a copy of the boot drive after purchase?

Different PC's have different keys. Lots of time for a Dell it is F4 and you have to keep taping it while it is booting. It may be another key also for a Dell and all you can do is keep trying different F keys.

MrBill, I asked the question about the laptop starting to the wallpaper as my understanding would be that the laptop IS going into the OS.
It looks like there is corruption in the Files and therefore it will be necessary to get Safe Mode if possible to enable repairs.
The Start and Shutdown process when carried out does work - I've used it before.

Did you follow the instruction in the Last Post at the bottom of the page?

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
I would use the 2nd choice (to create installation media) USB drive or SD card to enable you to repair the OS as you haven't indicated whether you made a copy of the original installation.
It seems that your Boot management is corrupted.
