My desktop just updated to version 2004. Very easy, but a bit lengthy. I got the update message for my older laptop. Tried to update and had huge problems. The easiest to recall was that it took forever to "get ready" then tried to download twice. It did the "get ready" three times then downloaded the update, but the update failed. When I checked for updates on my newer laptop, it said I was up to date. Wouldn't even try to go for version 2004.

Just had the wife's comp on today and it had 7 updates to download and install before the 2004 update was offered.
It is now running version 2004 W10 and OS build 19041.329 without any hitches.

Well, today that update was offered to both my systems. I started both of them and went away to let them get ready and when I came back:

The DeskTop running W10 Pro had already downloaded and installed but was waiting to restart.

The LapTop running W10 Home had the update waitng for me to agree to download and install.

On a Pro-system, shouldn't the user give the "go ahead" to download and install and not getting it up the rear end without consent?

On my Home-system which in the past has been known to download and install without consent, I was given the opportunity to start the procedure at my convenience!

I was starting to get to terms with Microsoft and the updates but I will never use Edge so why do they have to make the update mandatory and not optional? I was forced to do a few settings before even being able to close it and never return. They'll always find a way to annoy me ... :( ... !

The update didn't make my LapTop ready for version 2004.

You are so right about Edge being pushed by MS. I did all the obvious things until I got it off the screen and could then carry on with FF.
I must admit that I had to spend a bit of time getting rid of the 'Lock screen' but that happens nearly every time a major update comes along.
This worry about security is frustrating at times when all you want to do is start the comp and use it.
Our Government and our Ministry of Health came up with a phone App for tracing possible Covid 19 contacts.
You had to install the App on your cell phone and register your contact details. You also had to have a Password at least 13 characters long with a mixture of High and Low case letters and mix of digits.
They wondered why there was very slow pick up of users.
Too much paranoia with security for the older generation to worry about.
The other concern was to find the QR codes - not all business places had them!

Edge is probably like IE was. Entwined into the OS so it was really part of it. Kinda like buying a Chevy and not being able to go to the VW shop to get parts that fit.

Well, the desktop and one laptop are running version 2004. I have tried to update the older laptop three times and each time it has failed. This is the what I read in settings>update & security>view update history:
Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004 (3)
Last failed install attempt on 6/17/2020 - 0x8007042b

What do you imagine is going on?

Plenty of hits on Google here
Try disabling your antivirus if third party.and try again.

Forgive a newbie question, but why did it work on the other two machines that are identically setup (especially using Malwarebytes) plus they are all HPs?

Sometimes these idiosyncrasies with Windows are unexplained :) The older laptop even if it is the same model as the one which updated successfully may well be different internally. If it is a different model the internals will certainly have differences. This may or may not explain why one has updated and the other has not.

I would disable or remove Malwarebytes and any other third party antivirus and try again.

It could mean that some driver misbehaves while upgrading to latest version or the driver is just not compatible. It would have been very kind of Microsoft to explain in detail as to what is NOT compatible.
We can't do anything except wait for Microsoft/vendor to push the driver(s).Could be a long wait.

My main desktop has a SSD & I am hearing about the new version having defragmentation problems with SSD. So not doing anything for now, even though, the latest version is being offered on that PC.

No Problems with SSD's - ALL my comps and both HP Notebooks have SSD's.
My newest build desktop has M.2 NVMe SSD 256GB and I've had no problems with any of them apart from the Edge part of the OS.
This Notebook uses 125GB SSD for C: and 1TB HDD for the Data ops. No probs.

What happens if you reset the schedule for Optimization (in System > Storage) to say Monthly instead of Weekly?
