Just got this update today, but, saw that it has many problems including the blue screen of death for some users. It downloaded but I have the show or hide updates tool installed to hide it and keep it from installing for now. Any thoughts about installing this latest update. Please see the link concerning this and there are others too. https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordon...boot-problem-upgrade-windows-10/#414af302721e

    Thank you,

    Marvin

Marv6: I see from my Installed Updates folder that on 10/11/2019 the Windows update you refer to was downloaded along with KB4515871 and a security update, KB4521863. So far, everything seems to be working normally, no problems.

I've had that KB installed on 13th October and had no problems.

KB4517389 installed with no problems on this system on 10/9/2019. Just checked 3 other systems here and it installed successfully on all three as well.

I get so frustrated with these reports of problems every time a new update is released. And I am not exaggerating that these reports seems to happen "every" time. And yet, the facts are the overwhelming vast majority of users NEVER have problems.

There are over 800 million Windows 10 devices out there. If just 1/2 of 1 percent have problems, that 99.5% success rate would be considered outstanding in any other industry. But with W10 that's 4 million upset years and 4 million upset users can make a lot of noise - especially when folks like Gordon Kelly and Forbes are spring loaded and poised to pounce on MS to echo and amplify the problem, no matter how minor it may be with claims of "millions of broken Windows machines". :(

The result is those reports go viral, just as happened here as the same reports are repeated over and over again making the problem "appear" to be much worse than it is. Gordon Kelly, for example, is simply parroting what was reported at Techdows and MSPowerUser and note MSPowerUser references the Techdows article.

The facts are, it is no where near 4 million. And the REAL reports, as seen here shows it seems to be happening only on laptops, not PCs. And look at the numbers used in that Techdows article.

    Is it millions? Nope.
    10s of 1000s? Nope.
    1000s? Nope.
    100s? Nope.

OMG! 10 users! The world is coming to an end! Whatever shall we do? Well, apparently simply uninstalling that update fixes everything.

For sure, if one of my computers failed after an update, especially if it was this computer, I undoubtedly would be upset too. I do understand that. And I accept as fact that some users have experienced catastrophic failures due to a Windows Update. I would never deny that. And certainly, 1 is too many. But the odds are slim that will ever happen.

Just for the record, I have 6 W10 systems here and none have ever been broken by an update. The worse case scenario is there have been a few instances where one of my computers locked up during an update. But in each of those cases, a simple reboot cleared it up.

The moral is, keep current backups of any data we don't want to lose - which we should be doing anyway.

Thanks so much for your replies. Based on them I installed the KB in question, and while it seemed like forever it successfully installed along with another update. So far seems to be working ok.
