PeteC, a very good point, in my case tried one or two spare external HDs and USB stick, each time same result. Checked all my HDs and HUB Sticks, all are NTFS. Macrium, as I remember showed 81 file but no reference to these files.

PeteC, I tried another try at Macrium, and taken a result as shown below. However, there is no symbol showing on desktop to open again Macrium, without installing again.

You should find Macrium listed on the Start Menu (See image below) - either click on the 3 horizontal lines to expand the window and scroll down to 'M' or simply scroll down. To place a shortcut on the Desktop locate the Macrium .exe file in either C:\ Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86), right click on it > Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
    Capture.JPG

There are several references on Google re. Error VSS_E_Bad_State the solutions for which are extremely complex and I would not recommend you to try them -`a lot of it is gobbledygook to me although sitting in front of the computer I might muddle through.

The only thing I would say is do you have enough space on the WD Elements drive to accommodate the contents of C:\ drive. To check the used space on C:\ drive right click on the drive in File Explorer > Properties and check the Used Space.

PeteC, C:\ 132 GB free 105GB Used. D:\ Elements (Backups) 7.60 GB free Used: 923GB.
It appears there is not enough free in D:\ for backups.

Even though the image backup failed to complete the data will have been written to the drive - as you checked free space on D:\ Elements AFTER making the image the failed backup will be included in the used space. As you have made a number of attempts to image to the D:\ drive I guess that the data from each failed backup is taking up space on the drive - failed backups (images) should be deleted - they are useless!

I don't think lack of disk space is the cause of the failures - other factors are involved of which I have no knowledge.

PeteC, I have decided to make an HD solely for Image backups. I can't understand that the HD shows to 237GB - 180GB free, this means the Image back up as 57GB! Installed Macurian Backup, it made an image backup as Successful. I must admit it took a few attempts, but appears what is done to be correct. Certainly what Macurian offers will suffice my needs for a restore of Windows if need be.

Well - good news at last :)
A wise move - FWIW I image my C:\ drive twice weekly (using Acronis) to 2 independent internal hard drives and back up the latest image weekly to an external drive.
Do be sure to create Rescue Media which will be required if you have to restore an image to the PC in the event that it will not boot. For reference read (and bookmark) this link. See Contents - Part 2 Create Rescue Media ....

PeteC, I thought it maybe of interest, installed MacriumReflect7 Free, and after much trial and error, finally manage to Backup/Restore of my computer, certainly find this software does what I require. Found out that Macrium, gives no advice or help to users of the Free edition, and this leaves you entirely on your own, it does however give a very good and easy to follow help document as a down load.

Thanks for the update and glad to hear that you have successfully imaged your drive using Macrium. It's pretty much par for the course that free versions are not well supported, but, as you discovered, there are manuals which can be downloaded from the site.

Macrium for some reason, has stopped the Restore function, with the Backup only functioning. Nothing recently, has been added or changed. I have tried several alternative Backup software's since buying computer, in addition to Microsoft own title, of which none appear to carry out this procedure. This making me think, the cause must be this computer.

I suggest you search the Macrium forum or start a thread there - with no experience of Macrium it is ifficult to help you further.

I assume you made the Recovery Disk? see my post #27

If your comp works OK with normal W10 OS why blame the computer?
The Software drives the comp and you operate the entire device.
I have used W10 Backup system OK and previously I have used AOMEI Backup and EaseUS ToDo Backup and all worked OK.

Thank you both for your responses, appreciated. I still wonder as to why, Backup/Restore have always given me hassle, it must be down to my repeating same errors or simply just lack of grasping the working know how.

I have tried out AOMEI software. Starting up showed IPersist File: Save failed code 0x800700002. Install stopped - showed about 10 listed file used by others - Skip - Cancel.
I clicked Skip and Backup started. Finally showed My Backup(1) completed successfully.
I have not tried the Restore. I noticed that C HD is selected by default for backup, rather than choice of HD. If this Backup software carries out successfully Backup/Restore, will suit my purpose. Thanks for mentioning this software.

I am using AMOEI Backupper for quite some time on different computers and didn't have any issues whatsoever.

If the backup utility is failing at some point it means that there is something wrong with your computer. It could be RAM or hard disk. Suggest you thoroughly check your hard disks with both the manufacturer's app & chkdsk.

rsinfo, I have incurred difficulty in using AMOEI in that, trying a restore.it shows it can't locate the backup saved on D drive. The D drive is connected with appropriate backups saved within it. Can you please rsinfo, advise as to where I am going wrong. Thanks Bobby.

You will have to isolate your backup from 1 (one) HDD. I would imagine if you have several HDD's connected - AOMEI Backupper may well get confused.

RL there is only one external HD connected that is the one AOMEI uses. Only other one is C drive internal. rsinfo appears to use AOMEI, perhaps he can say what could be the trouble. Appreciate your response RL..

Using AOMEI with a computer having 3 physical internal drives & 1 external USB drive. There are a total of 6 partitions. No problems till now.
