Microsoft has "paused" the rollout of Windows 10, version 1809 "as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating."

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history

It's not "some files", some users are discovering that all their files are missing from the "My Documents" folder after updating...

Now, of course this does underline yet again that before doing any upgrade you should always make sure you have a (working) backup in place...

I take backup of partitions where my OS is installed plus where my data is before updating. You never know. Haven't needed these backups in last 3 years.

Microsoft has just announced that an updated build of 1809 has been made available to the Windows Insider community as a first step to evaluate a broader re-release.

According to Microsoft in only one-hundredth of one percent of version 1809 installs had the data loss occurred (on an installed base of over 500,000,000 Windows 10 installations that would still result in 50,000 angry customers).

A detailed explanation can be found on the Windows Blog.

I have upgraded four computers using the .iso download without a problem. All of the computers had the Documents, Downloads Music etc. on a different drive.

Good for all early explorers. I would hold out for a few weeks.

How is that done on the "home edition" on which the user is totally out of control, updates can't be denied or even paused?

It can't be done on Home edition only on Pro. Fortunately, I have Pro on all of my critical computers.

With Win10, MS has made it almost impossible to either know what's in the update or to stop an update from installing. So you can't avoid anything.

In fact it's pretty easy ;)

Start > Run and type in regedit (press OK). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\.

Right-click the Windows key, select New > Key. Name this key WindowsUpdate.

    newkey.PNG

Right-click this key and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

    newdword.PNG

Name this value ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate (press Enter to confirm), double click this entry and change the value from 0 to 1 and you're all set.
