So maybe a week or two ago, whenever I start up my computer, running Windows 10 currently, two messages appear while appearing to load things. One says "Preparing Automatic Repair" and after this is over, the next load screen message says "Diagnosing your PC"

After which, it sends me to a mostly blue screen that says "Automatic Repair" with two options: Restart, or Advanced options. From what I hear, the process of fixing this is usually as simple as just going into Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, and this is usually fixed with a Startup Repair or System Restore.

    No.

I tried everything. I tried multiple save points on my System Restore, I attempted Startup Repair numerous times, I tried tinkering with my Startup Settings, going back to a previous version, I even tried in desperation to do a System Image Recovery. Then, after that, I looked up a few different methods that CLAIM you can use Command Prompt to get your way out of this. I follow the instructions, and nothing. I'm still stuck on Automatic Repair.

So, with no other options left, I attempt a full factory reset on my PC. I select "Reset this PC" then I try all 3 options (Including a complete erase.) All of which end in the computer telling me that it encountered an error and that no changes were made.

I should also mention that choosing any of the 10 options for "Startup Settings" just brings me back to the exact same problem in a loop.

Can anyone help me? If it's of any help, this was just about the same time Windows 10 updated. I'm almost completely sure it's related, but I'm not sure if it's helpful in fixing things.

UPDATE: So I disabled the Automatic Repair, and got a "Recovery" screen instead. I'll just rewrite what it says to me.

    Recovery

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

The operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors.

    File:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\volume.sys
    Error code: 0xc000000d

    Any fixes for this?

Hi Eric Gray, Welcome to WindowsBBS.:) Sorry to see you have a bit of a problem. Did you try to uninstall the last update?
Have you tried this MS procedure? Windows 10 Update: Error Code 0xc000000d
Also disconnect ALL peripherals and disable any 3rd. party Anti-Virus software.

Thank you for your reply. If you mean "System Restore" or "Return to a Previous Version" then yes I have made several attempts to undo the update. However, without actually being able to leave the Automatic Repair screen, I can't utilize any other method of removing/undoing the update. At least, not the traditional methods.

I also do not have a Windows 10 CD. I got a free 'upgrade' from Windows 7 to Windows 10. My computer doesn't even have a disk tray (though it does support USBs.) I have actually attempted to revert to Windows 7 using a USB device but this has been fruitless as with all my other attempts.

As for peripherals and 3rd party anti-virus software; the only things I have connected are my keyboard and mouse. I also disabled the anti-virus software in the Startup Settings.

I should emphasize that I cannot leave this screen. Not even going into Safe Mode allows me to go to my normal browser window.

Hi Eric. At this point would you prefer to perform a clean installation of Windows 7 or Windows 10 to get your computer back to a usable state?

Start > Settings > Update and Security > view update history > Uninstall updates is the usual way to try this.

You may be best to follow instructions from Evan.

When the upgrade from W7 to W10 was carried out - you were able at that point to make a complete image of the W10 on USB if you didn't have a ROM drive.
I did this myself on my HP Notebook. Only 1 (one) copy could be made!

I have this solved, but I'll leave this here for anyone in the future who may have my same issue.

I believe this is what I had to do. I say that, because I eventually had to give a call to a nearby computer technician to take a look at it. I gave him all the information I gave here, and he went through another series of steps attempting to fix the problem. Many, many of them failed, which caused him to use what he called a "last resort" where he, as he called it, 'nuked the system' from a boot drive of Windows 10, which supposedly completely removed all operating systems from the PC. At which point I had to use a new version of windows with my own product key in order to get it working again. This DID affect my drivers substantially, but with a few downloads, everything's in fine, working order again.

After exhausting all other viable possibilities, this was my only choice left. So, to anyone else who might have this problem, this may be the only solution.
