I have had problems over the last ten days booting my PC . After signing in either I am unable to activate the start and search buttons or my PC shows problems with my internet security, firewall and anti virus Programmes. Rebooting makes no significant difference. Checking my task and processes shows the following message "Microsoft\Windows\Plug and Play\ Device Install Reboot Required". If I terminate this task I can then boot normally into Windows 10 with full use of the start and search buttons. However the message keeps reappearing on initial boot and I cannot track down the source. Device Manager shows no problems and I just cannot get rid of or delete the Reboot message. I have tried the Windows troubleshooters which seemingly effect a cure but only until the next reboot. Any advice on eliminating the problem which is a perfect pain would be much appreciated.

    Hi Sandy,

Your thread had been marked as solved and I assume by mistake. I removed that marking.

Doing a Google, I see that a member of Windows Secrets had the same problem. He solved the problem by using MS MCT (Media Creator Tool). He downloaded the ISO and and re-installed W10 which fixed the problem.

I have never at any time previously been required to re-install any Microsoft Windows OS. I reluctantly accepted my local guru's advice to install Windows 10, having previously tried and rejected the freeby WIN 10 install on two occasions. Fortunately I retained my Windows 7 Home Premium installation on a separate SSD disc on my PC. This has never ever given me any real problems whereas Win 10 is a continual source of lesser or greater problems. This latest is indeed a royal pain and I really have no intention of reinstalling the OS which is clearly not fit for purpose. Sort it out Microsoft !!!!

Sorry to hear of your problems but I have 2 Desktops and 1 HP Notebook all running W10 Pro and Notebook on Home version 1709 without problems.
I have also 1 Desktop dedicated to W10 Insider Preview since 23/07/2015 and has had 62 updates installed without any hassles. The 3 Desktops are self built with new parts and are mid-spec.
The HP Notebook was purchased new in August 2013 and was running W8 originally - then upgraded to W8.1 - then upgraded to W10 Home. I'm still a happy camper with W10.;)

I presume you have never had occasion to reinstall Windows 10. I have just spent the most frustrating morning with the same task and message being terminated and returning each and every reboot. What is the point of having Microsoft troubleshooters which appear to sort out the problem but without any positive effect?
ps I finally got the start and cortana search up and running but have absolutely no idea how or why it is now working.

Essentially when doing a Re-install it pays to do in a Bare-Bones state. All unnecessary peripherals disconnected and just 1 HDD/SSD connected. Any 3rd party AV disabled

I will not re-install under any circumstances but, after more frustrated reboots yesterday, I have done some more research and consultations. It appears that the consensus among geeks and supergeeks who are more versed than I in IT intricacies is that there is no immediate and lasting solution to the Reboot Required Task and a patch from Microsoft will be required. There are a number of temporary fixes and I have applied them. I am now able to get Win 10 fully up and running straight away without problems and I hope this will continue until Microsoft settles the issue ( I am not holding my breath). For the record one major source is

I presume this thread can now be marked as partially resolved !!
