    Hi Nick,

    Welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

I went google on wpa2 for windows xp sp3 (click) and found that support for wpa2 is included in Windows XP SP3. For Windows XP SP2 there were two patches but those don't install on SP3. You can also find that the hardware (wireless adaptor) must support wpa2 and that the drivers may need updating.

    You need to find out:
    - is SP3 installed?
    - does the wireless adaptor support wpa2?
    - is the wireless adaptor compatible with XP SP3?
    - if so, are the drivers up to date?
    - if not, download and install the most recent drivers for XP SP3 (may be hard to find for an obsolete operating system).

    Good luck!

Thanks Christer very much - I have a second Dell Inspiron - the wireless adaptor is the same in both laptops namely Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG (the driver in the one which works with wpa2 is however 9.0.0.61 - whereas the driver in the laptop which doesn't like wpa2 is 9.0.4.39. Also sadly the laptop causing the problems is sp2 so I guess I need to go down the patches route - could you advise please..?

    Nick, you're welcome!

As I understand it, those updates for SP2 are not available anymore since the release of SP3. Nor have I found SP3 available for download. It seems like the best course of action would be to retire those computers and go shopping. I mean, Win XP has been superseeded by Vista, which has been superseeded by Win 7, which has been superseeded by Win 8, you know were I'm going with this ... ;) ... and Black Friday might be a good day to get a computer with Win 10!

Well, I found SP3 at Microsoft Update Catalog. I still believe that the best course of action is to retire those computers with an old, insecure operating system but since SP3 is still available from Microsoft, I leave it to you to decide.

A few articles to assist in making you decision:

    Windows XP support has ended

Information about Windows XP Service Pack 3

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

After reading those articles, do you want to install SP3? If you do, I will not, repeat NOT be able to assist if anyting goes wrong!

    SP3 from Microsoft Update Catalog

After clicking "download", choose your language and where to save it.

I, once again, recommend to retire those computers and go shopping!

Hi Christer I did decide to download and install SP3 and it has cured the problem so once again a huge thank you to you - however I have taken serious note of your recommendation to retire these computers and am currently looking at replacements. You're a star !!!

I'm glad that it worked and also that you consider new hardware. I believe that you also had a few updates delivered after installing SP3. There's some catching up to do.

Well, I don't know about that ... ... we all try to do our best!

Also, don't forget to mark the thread as solved!
